Question about girl guides

I was under the impression that girl guide / brownie / rainbow leaders could only be women.

I've signed DD up to Rainbows and the leader has got in touch and is a man.

This isn't a trans issue, before anyone starts. Being nosy I've checked out social media etc and this person genuinely seems to be a married man who now leads a Rainbows group.

So has it changed?

It's been that way for a long time as far as I know. I don't know how many men are actually involved in practice though!

PuttingDownRoots · 28/10/2022 18:23

I thought they could be assistants but not leaders?

But given how much they are struggling for leaders, its better than the Rainbows closing.

Are they the assistant dealing with the admin?

I’m not involved with Guides but I am with Scouting, sections if not whole groups are having to close locally due to lack of leaders.

Hello,
I’ve been running Guides for 30 years. Men are not allowed to be leaders. They can be a unit helper, but would not have the qualifications that the leader and assistant leaders have. I’m not sure what is going on in that Rainbow Unit but a man can’t be running it.

rachrose8 · 31/10/2022 21:02

They can’t be leaders, but can be a “unit helper”

Fieldfly · 06/11/2022 15:29

Men cannot be leaders.

Hmm well I was sent some forms to fill in and he's named as the leader.

DD has decided she doesn't want to go now anyway.

Maybe leave it a year and look into Beavers instead?

toomuchlaundry · 07/11/2022 20:25

Scouting offer Squirrels now, although not in all areas, which is from 4

This is very weird. I'd email/call the DC for your area to ask. As others have said only women can be leaders, Dads can be regular unit helpers. My DH will sometimes help when I have a leader sick or another parent helper drops out. I'm the leader and my own girls are in my unit.
