Online piano lessons...thoughts

Hi all, just wondered about your thoughts on online piano or tutoring in general.

I like the idea of online or in person but I'm a bit more hesitant of online . There is a lady offering lessons that has great results and has rave reviews ---- Im thinking of giving her a try. She's mainly beginners to intermediate with kids and teens, but the lessons are affordable and she has the option to move them around as much as I like.

I'm just wondering if I should go the traditional route or try out the online option? Or if you have anything I should consider?

I've never signed up for instrumental lessons before.

Honestly, if you can try a face to face lesson then do. It's so hard to get the same rapport with online and music is about sound - why channel that through a microphone and a compressed zoom setting?

I really recommend the app SIMPLY PIANO to the first. Have a few weeks with that on your iPad and then see if you want to continue.

Another vote for Simply Piano app as something to try to start with. Maybe face to face lessons thereafter.

I taught online during covid and hate it, you don’t get the same rapport and there’s so many techniques that are more difficult to demonstrate over a phone video link.

my friend on the other hand has loved it, if you’re in the sw and the ladies initials are JL do it she’s great.

I also have online guitar lessons and whilst not ideal it works for me.

Interesting! Why does guitar online work for you?

Yeah, this lady seems to have a really professional setup, that online lessons aren't an afterthought but something she's out time and effort into

Thanks for your comment! Actually she's using a different platform, I cant remember the name but I think it's built for music teachers working online

Our daughters had lessons in person and then online for Covid as everyone else. We have 5 girls and none of them progressed / enjoyed online. I would not go back to online out of choice.

Interesting! What did they hate? How did they stop making progress?

There's no good platform that can reproduce a teachers ears and eyes when they are with you. And I would avoid Simply Piano like the plague - you can't learn good technique from that and it's so much better to learn correctly from the start under guidance from an expert.

Thank you so much for your advice! Are you a piano teacher?

DD started piano lessons when she started secondary school through our local music service - unfortunately that was in 2020 so she went straight to online lessons. It worked for her, she progressed really well. This (school) year she finally met her teacher in person and to be honest I’m not sure that was much difference progress-wise.
I think online is worth a try - but I agree that some things are hard to explain/demonstrate
on video. (And the setup for online lessons is a bit of PITA to be honest.)

I think because I’m a piano teacher and I played the violin as a kid to around grade 5 there are many techniques I am half way there with, so for me I needed different things from this teacher than I did with other instruments. I have had 1 face to face lesson to see the technique properly which was good but I wouldn’t want to do it regularly as he lives 25 minutes away from me.
