Guitar is not loud enough

Hello, may I please ask for help ? At the school club performance, my DD is playing guitar. She is not happy that her guitar is not loud enough and that it is drowned out by the background piano.

She play acoustic guitar but I am not sure if I need to buy a new one and which one would be lauder and easy to carry for her to after school club . There are no microphones for them to use. Thanks

You could buy a guitar pickup and use a small amplifier. Can she move further away from the piano. What does the music teacher suggest.

Maybe she needs to strum with more force or use a different pick. Acoustic guitars can be pretty loud sometimes!

acoustic guitars are quieter than a piano.

but it's about position as well. she might hear more of the piano than her guitar if she's sitting close to it.

how long has she been playing? has she learned to play with open strings?

pickup and an amplifier, or an electroacoustic guitar + amplifier is the answer - has the teacher not noticed that she is not audible?

Thank you very much everyone . Club doesn’t have a qualified music teacher although the teacher is extremely helpful . It’s a musical, end of the year performance. Do I need any specific size pick up ?
I found few Yamaha electro acoustic guitar online but would be nice if someone can recommend one please.

Are you thinking of getting a new electric acoustic guitar or a pick up and amp. Is it a child size. What style does she play. Will she use it regularly and in school club. Does the pianist use the loud pedal.

She loves playing guitar.Usually plays David Bowie , girls aloud etc so I think she will love an upgrade. I would like to buy an electric acoustic guitar to make it more fun for her. She will take her grade 3 exam this year.

Sorry , forgot to mention that she takes her guitar lessons at school and we receive quarterly report. I don’t know anything else about music or guitar.

She must have a teacher who has prepared her for Grade 3. Ask that person for guidance on what to buy. Explain what your daughter is finding frustrating. I think she'd love an electric guitar and amp - but I'm no expert on guitars (although I'm a musician).
This sounds like it could take off for her - the next K T Tunstall in the making! Make sure she gets lots of opportunities for live performance to build her confidence too

Yamaha is a good make, always best to try guitars out in person so look for your nearest guitar shop. She needs to be able to hold it, make sure it's comfortable to play, hear it through an amp etc

Generally the size (depth) of the body will dictate how loud an acoustic is. Obviously you can’t get something that’s too big, but a shallow bodied electro acoustic will produce less volume than a full depth body.

Also steel strings will project a lot more than nylon, a strummed nylon string really isn’t that loud.

She needs an electro acoustic guitar (which will have a built-in pickup) with steel strings, and an amp.

Either that or get the pianist to play more quietly.
