My DS wants to learn piano. he is quite musical but he has ASD and has been unable to cope with the demands of formal instrument teaching even with very kind relaxed and understanding teachers. Its a combination of anxiety and not coping with the smallest of perceived 'demand'. He wants me to try to help him learn. I play various instruments to various levels, self taught myself piano to grade 5 as a child when I was about grade 6/7 clarinet which I did to grade 8. I think I can have a go at engaging him at his level and on his terms, its the sort of thing that he will cope with 5 minutes input a day from me and then he will do his own thing.. but wondered if anyone had any recommendations of piano books or series that might be a good place to start... I dont want his disability to be a barrier to something he could really enjoy.

Hi, I’ll help if I can. Which book(s) has he used so far? Is he a complete beginner? Does he play around by ear?

Would YouTube videos be suitable rather than, or as well as, books?

Thank you ! He used (or rather didn't use ) music given out by his teacher so wasn't a specific book . He does play around a bit by ear but gets frustrated. He likes rules but not being told what to do ! I looked at some youtube stuff but he doesn't want to watch it.... it may just be too much for him but I'm happy to try .. he may only cope with me saying look this key is C, here it is in the book if you want to have a look, then leaving him to it as he will refuse to look then but will sneak back and try when he thinks no one is looking !

I think my top recommendation in this case would be Daniel MacFarlane SuperSonics, beginning with Junior Series 1a and the app (the backing tracks are the fun bit!):

For a more traditional start, the John Thompson book 1 would work too:

My 6 year old has 1-1 piano lessons at our towns Rock School Studios. They use an introductory book called The Piano Method, before grade books. Before starting lessons we’d been doing the free lessons on Hoffman Academy and DS is really getting on swiftly now :)
