People often give them away on Gumtree and Facebook. No idea of the quality however.

People give them away all the time. Costs about £150 to get someone to move them (man in van, not specialist).

What you do depends on cost. I bought an electric one with weighted keys instead.

You can spend whatever you like on second hand pianos, they are available at every price point. The best bet would be to visit a dealer and try out several. Enjoy your piano shopping!

I got a free one and it stunk. Not sure what of, just age I think, but it had to go.

What level is your daughter playing at? That will make a difference to what instrument you buy. There are a couple of good second hand dealers (such as Coach House Pianos) who will sort you out with something good - decent Yamaha/Kawai/Kemble will all be available second hand for under £5k and should take you up to Grade 8 and beyond.
