Foreign language DVDs for young children

Are there any you’d recommend? I wish I’d had the chance to learn another language at a young age, so I’d love to give my three-year-old the opportunity. I know she’ll never become fluent by watching a DVD, but I’m hoping she might be able to pick up a good accent.

I’ve read positive reviews about a French series featuring Serge the monkey, but it seems to be “out of print”.

Try duolingo

Yeah conversation is obviously best, but you could try putting the foreign language dubbing over a programme they know well?

Cattenberg · 19/11/2021 00:34

Thank you. I’ll try both of those!

I mean, which language? French?

I agree with dubbing over a previously enjoyed programme.

Cattenberg · 19/11/2021 09:07

It could be French, but it doesn’t have to be. Spanish, German or Russian would also be good.

Muzzy! I used this alongside my DSs' nursery French lessons when they were 2y. You can get them on Ebay, brilliant courses aimed at young children.

Kanaloa · 19/11/2021 09:50

I would probably pick one language? I don’t think there’s any point in picking random languages because unless she’s having lessons of some sort dvds are a bit pointless. I watch lots of foreign films but don’t pick up the language. If she isn’t having lessons in Spanish/German/Russian then I’m not sure what she’ll get out of it really.

Dora is good for learning simple Spanish.

Muzzy!

* El perro y el gato.
About a bouncy dog and lazy cat having little adventures is a lovely pre school series in Spanish.
My dc watched it as pre schoolers before we moved to a Spanish speaking country.

Cattenberg · 22/11/2021 22:15

Yeah, I will pick one language. Those all sound great - I’ll look into them. I can teach some vocabulary myself, but my accent is crap, so hearing native speakers would be ideal.

Depending on the language there might also be children’s groups in your area you can look into - not proper lessons but more playing and learning. At a nursery I worked at a lady came to do French with the children once a week but she taught them in a child friendly preschool way, not sitting for grammar lessons! Something like that is always worth looking into.

If you want actual classes then you could try Lingotots www.lingotot.com/classes We went with our daughter to the Spanish classes when she was a pre-schooler. A mix of nursery rhymes and some words.

KittenKong · 25/11/2021 19:33

The boy did Muzzy... kiddo got a 9 in his french gcse (may not be related).

I can still remember the songs!

Cattenberg · 28/11/2021 17:17

I’ll definitely look at Muzzy! No Lingotots or other groups around here, sadly. There were pre-school French classes once, but not anymore.
