Swimming club in Sussex

loveswimming · 10/08/2021 10:20

Moving to Sussex in September. Looking for a strong competitive club for my DC. Was considering Brighton and Mid Sussex marlins so far but not sure which one is better for high-performance training. Not looking for just a club, need a club with strong coaches able to deliver results. Many thanks

I'm not from the area but I'm a swimming teacher why not do a trial at both then decide?

in my experience trials do not give you good insights but the feedback of current swimmers and their parents do.

Ah, one of those parents.

loveswimming · 12/08/2021 21:09

yes, one of those who care about the quality of coaching...

Because of course someone looking for “strong coaches able to deliver results” doesn’t look like anyone wanting to put pressure on kids to perform.

You can care about quality coaching without being pushy.

If you have nothing to advise, just ignore the post. I am tired of lazy coaches who can't be bothered to do anything in the pool apart from giving a silly set of 50 x 100m and then sitting 'in their phones' during the pool practice... no correction, no encouragement, no nothing...

That’s different to “strong coaches able to deliver results” then. What you actually want is coaches that work on technique and treat swimmers as individuals and work with them on their strengths and weaknesses.

Although, from my experience, coaches who do long slogging types of sets are more than able to deliver results for their chosen few.

Fullofglee · 13/08/2021 11:28

You want a club that has different ability sets then and she will be placed in the approiate set, obviously I don't know the level of your daughters at but being a club swimmer my technique was very good however my stammer needed work.

Where I'm from we have an amature club then the elite club and even there they have the A B C D team and placed in the appropriate set based on times, you have to be scooted from the amature club to join the elite club.

We moved to Sussex recently and trialled Brighton, Mid Sussex Marlins and Crawley. Brighton were friendly but their pools are old and horrible with terrible parking. They don't do that well at counties etc.
Mid-Sussex Marlins we're unfriendly, unhelpful and their training times were awkward. They are a good club though in terms of results.
Crawley were fantastic - really friendly, excellent coaches, good training times and squad progression. Easy pool to locate and park at, just off the A23. DDs been swimming with them a couple of months and is very happy there and improving well too.

My DC are not swimmers so don't know the details but several friends children swim competitively with a club based at Bedes school

Ekofisk · 18/08/2021 23:26

Have your kids met any kids from that area at galas etc? I know nothing about swimming but for the sport my kids do I have a good idea which are the decent clubs from which clubs have kids that podium at the nationals etc. (And also which clubs also have kids that enter the nationals and don’t podium but have obviously been encouraged to give it a go anyway. As the last thing you
want is to join a club that only cares about its “chosen few”.

We found Mid Sussex Marlins to be the best option for us years ago when we moved. The coaches are all professional (and paid- maybe that makes a difference?). Our kids have progressed well through teaching groups and into squads. They get loads of opportunities to swim at galas (even when they’re young and inexperienced) and the sets are varied and fun with wonderful, motivational coaches who give good feedback and interact well with the whole group. The club have been understanding and supportive through various injuries and issues. It seems to run really well. The kids have made great friends and we never have to ask them if they want to train. They wouldn’t miss it. Highly recommend. 😊
