Meal ideas for DoE Expedition

Willowtree999 · 10/06/2021 11:09

My DS will be doing his bronze expedition soon and I am struggling with food ideas for the second day in particular as lots of things he likes won't keep. Does anyone have any ideas or things their DC have taken previously?

Back in the day we took very basic provisions:
Super noodles with Hot Dog sausages
Vesta curries
Pitta breads or crackers with soup, tinned tuna or potted meat/sandwich spread
Cake with tinned custard (eat on day 1 as tins are heavy!)

Lightsabre · 10/06/2021 11:13

Are they allowed to bring tins? Camping stove? Marks do fairly nice tinned curries, chilli etc. Could make up cous cous or rice to go with it. Tins of tuna and sweet corn for sandwich fillings. Corned beef ok hot or cold.

DS took Nutella / peanut butter wraps - wrapped well they where fine not being refrigerated for the 2nd day. If stopping to cook then hot dogs / Instant noodles / rice

Pouches of meals from go outdoors. Lighter to carry. Easy to heat, boil in the bag style. Eat straight from pouch so no need to carry plates. Ds recommends the chocolate pudding.

RaspberryCoulis · 10/06/2021 11:19

Oh and many can be eaten cold

TheSmallAssassin · 10/06/2021 11:21

Can they not just take boil in the bag Wayfayrer kind of stuff? My son had grated cheese mixed with mayo in a baguette for lunches which was calorific and portable. Not something he would normally eat, but needs must 😁

It's up to your son to sort really, though? That's part of the point of the expedition?

00100001 · 10/06/2021 11:24

surely your son should be deciding this with his group? Confused

00100001 · 10/06/2021 11:25

they can just take things like pasta and sauce - tin of tuna or something if they want.

titchy · 10/06/2021 11:27

It's a group activity organising food not a someone's mum activity!

Bronze is only one night - the second days food is only breakfast and lunch. Surely between them they can work it out!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/06/2021 11:29

Why are you involved? He is 16+ and presumably sorting the food is part of the challenge?

Willowtree999 · 10/06/2021 11:40

Probably should have explained better. The school have organised it so that they work out their evening meal together, which will be cooked but breakfast and lunch is up to them and lunch needs to be a packed lunch type thing as they won't have time to cook then. He is very much sorting it himself but would normally have things for lunch that wouldn't keep and wanted ideas.

DD is taking sandwiches for day 1 and primula cheese spread with ritz crackers for day 2. Also being taken are malt loaf bars and pepperamis.

Willowtree999 · 10/06/2021 11:44

Thank you for your ideas

D1 did the silver DoE and took packed lunch (for first day), hot choc sachets, a packet of wraps, and pot noodle/pasta pot/instant porridge type things plus Kendal mint cake and chocolate. They did their expedition in the Lakes, and the expedition leader told them a girl on a previous expedition had just brought a whole raw chicken in her food bag Grin

TheSmallAssassin · 10/06/2021 13:02

Sausage rolls are pretty good, and if you're worried about them staying fresh for the second day, take them frozen.

NannyR · 10/06/2021 13:07

A quick backpacking breakfast is granola in a zip lock bag with powdered milk (the Nido one in a yellow tin is nicer than the dried skimmed milk powder), then you just add a bit of water to the bag to reconstitute the milk.

BluePeterVag · 10/06/2021 13:13

Wayfarer meals. Dried fruit. Hot chocolate sachets. DS isn’t that keen on it but he will have to just get on with it for the short time they are there.
Plus they bag of emergency rations they have to show is still not touched at the end of the expedition: eg raw jelly slab, haribo etc.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 10/06/2021 13:16

Something light to carry which doesn't squash. I like PP idea of frozen sausage rolls

YlangYlangYlangYlang · 10/06/2021 13:16

Mine have all taken belvita bars for breakfast (no one wants to spend time lighting stoves in the morning) and either crackers/oatcakes and small tuna snack pack/peanut butter in a sachet/cheese spread plus apple/nuts/snack bars. Hot cross buns were good too as don't need any toppings.

Summertime21 · 10/06/2021 13:22

Mine took individual pain au chocolate or croissants for day 2 with lots of snacks

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/06/2021 13:22

Trail Mix (he can mix his own)
Cereal bars
Banana
Apple

Done.

leeds2glasgow · 10/06/2021 13:40

I took tuna light lunches.

Willowtree999 · 10/06/2021 20:25

Thanks for all of your ideas, think he has a plan now.
