Competitive sport

Hi,

DD's been able to carry on with her sport during lockdown via zoom and so still been able to enter some competitions.
Her friend commented on something this morning when they were chatting that made me wonder if I'm wrong for letting DD spend so many hours on her sport. She loves entering comps even when she doesn't place and has really enjoyed being able to still do her sport and compete during this last year.
I've also been asked in the past why she does something nearly every night (pre 2020/2021) and why I allow her to enter comps when I could spend that money on other things and was told I can be proud of DD without medal after medal, trophy after trophy.
So why do you let your child either do lots of activities or competitive sport?
For me, DD was trying several sports when younger and actually ended up being quite good at two and so asked to compete as she got older. She did both competitively for a short while but decided she loves the one she does now and when she is older wants to teach it. I love the smiles, confidence and passion she has for the sport and the determination, perseverance and desire to learn correct technique and do well.

I let him because he loves it!! No brainer really!! Why would you say no! Plenty of worse things to be so into!! (Drugs? Drinking? Partying? Computer games?) (I caveat that with mine loves computer games as well as his sport!! And is too young for the other stuff yet - but will no doubt enjoy some of those too!) Can't see what's wrong with kids throwing themselves into sport - they get to enjoy themselves! It teaches them hard work, discipline, determination and that working hard pays off! Keeps them fit! What's not to like?

I think those people saying those things to you probably don't have kids that are as passionate and talented, so don't understand. Let them judge away. You know your child!
