Play grade 4 second instrument at JD audition?

My DD (11) is at one of London JD but is going to audition other JDs.

She just started piano three months ago and practices just 20 minutes every day but her progress is really fast and now plays grade 4 pieces.

Do you think if it's a good idea to play piano at the audition or maybe better to stick to her main instrument?

I don't think Grade 4 at 11 is going to open many doors at a JD.

Don't the entry requirements of the relevant JDs give any advice as to expected standards on particular instruments? I think that they may have lower requirements for instruments which are traditionally started at a later age .e.g. organ, double bass, but the more usual first instruments such as violin and piano would have the expectation of a higher grade attached to them, I would have thought, even if started later, as a second instrument. It might be best to try and clarify with the JDs.

I'd say that's fabulous progress in a short time and against that background then why not!?? It's second instrument anyway...?

Thank you very much for your comments and I am sorry for lack of explanation.

She plays violin got grade 8 distinction when she was 10 and is already at one of London JD but will audition other JDs for some reasons.

Currently she learns piano at her school but she is also interested in learning piano as second instrument at JD, so considering to play piano at audition but not sure if it is too low even as second instrument.

Why not just explain the situation to the JD in question and ask if they're interested in hearing her piano now as a 2nd instrument or at what stage of progress it might be possible? I don't think it should ever be embarrassing to play a piece you can play accurately and musically.

Thank you for your comment. I inquired to one of JDs but the answer was just a common one that they will see potentials rather than grade.

It’s far more easier if I can talk with them in person at open day... anyway I will inquire to other JDs, too and probably just let her try!

Sounds like a yes play to me. Won't change their opinion of her violin playing either way. Good luck!

I agree with thirdfiddle. I think it’s worth offering the piano, making sure 1)the panel knows it’s only been a very short time since starting, and 2) she can play accurately and musically. They care far more about the first study (so her application isn’t really compromised by relatively low piano grade) and it’s a great way to show them your DD is interested in different facet of music making, which will show her to be a more rounded musician. A win-win in my view. Good luck 🤞

Thank you very much for your advise. DD decided to play piano!
