Hi all

Ds is 5 and just started year1. He currently does swimming and football, both of which just restarted this week.

Just wondering if there are particular extra curricular activities that private schools look for? He is currently at state, with the aim of doing 7+.

Also, when applying to private school, is there a section on the form for achievements and a separate section for sports?

TIA

Private schools are interested in your money, they just want the kids who will be the easiest to teach to good grades, they're not looking for specific extra curriculars to make a rounded class or anything, the biases of individuals will make the only difference if any.

You should do things that he enjoys, or wants to try out.

Is competition stiff for places in your area? I assumed that the application form asked about extra curricular activity to give the interviewer something to talk to the child about, possibly to assess their enthusiasm/passion for life.

I suppose a competitive head might select boys that do mini rugby/hockey/cricket (football is often after school rather than timetabled)? Some children might be having music lessons, perhaps?

Not that it helps you, but I think DD(13) was doing ballet, swimming and probably had a couple of gym badges when we applied. She showed no real sign of being musical or sporty until she was 8 or 9, but she cane across as a happy little soul who would give things a try.

Hi there,
My little boy is in a prep school and unless you are after a scholarship then just an all round child is enough with the results that they are looking for. As long as he loves what he is doing and talks about his activities positively. All private schools love music, sport and arts. x
