Has anybody been able to get a music scholarship 13+ on trumpet?

My DS, 9 yo plays the trumpet and sometimes talks about French Horn, but not too eager. I am aware that probably French Horn has more potential for scholarship? or is trumpet possible too?

Yes DS has. Curious why you think French Horn has more potential for scholarship?

Also strongly urge you not to base instrument choice on scholarship but rather what your DS enjoys playing. Trumpet has a wide set of opportunities - big band, brass band, jazz band, orchestras, playing the last post, etc

thank you, I heard French Horn is a more rare instrument...

Please may I ask you what age did you son get a scholarship and what level was it at? Thank you

My friend's son has a scholarship with the trumpet (13+). Another friend's son has one with the French Horn (same school) - her son was strongly encouraged to apply by school as they were short of French Horn players in their orchestras.

DS got it for 13+ and was Grade 8 Distinction. No mention by music director that rarity of instrument would influence, and music scholarship process is after accepting your school offer, so they’re not trying to use it as a way to get you to choose the school. And no discount on school fees, though very helpfully pay for music lessons.

But each school’s approach is different. Your DS could always learn French Horn as a second instrument, but would urge focus on an instrument he actually enjoys playing.

I think most schools run a pre application scheme where you can go and see if the school thinks you are on track to consider applying for a scholarship there. Contact the school and ask if they do this. Schools will have different standards they're looking for, and different financial worth of a scholarship.
My ds got a scholarship on trombone and he played grade 7 pieces for the audition in y8.
A pupil of mine was grade 8 distinction on Horn when he applied (to a different school.)

Please don't make him play the french horn of he doesn't want to!
