30 or 45 minutes for a violin lesson

Hi my DD is 8 and has been having 30 minute lessons, she's booked in for G1 at the end of March and teacher wants her to start having 45 lessons but, I know her shoulder will start to ache after this long and its a long time for her to concentrate after a full day at school and homework. Just wondering if i can suggest to the teacher that 30 minutes is enough?

30 minutes is plenty at that age so long as she is practising in between lessons.
My DS (yr 6) has been having 20 minute lessons, shared with another girl, 10 lessons a term for almost 3 years and is preparing for his Grade 4 exam. Only now have they gone up to 30-minute lessons.

You might find she had suggested the extra time for aural test practice, it is a rush to fit that in sometimes. She wouldn't be holding her violin up for that, just singing and clapping. You could go back to 30 minutes after the exam? Although my DD has 30 minutes each for both instruments, just extra near exams.

30 mins is fine up to about Grade 4/5 but extra time may be needed for aural or theory.

I don't see any harm of asking to keep it for 30 mins until you think your DD is ready for a longer lesson. DS only increased to 45 mins from 30 mins when he was at around grade 8. Obviously there was not enough time to cover other things like aural and theory though. So it might be a good idea to increase the time if those will also be covered. I think it depends on the teacher/pupil rather than grade or standard of playing. DS's friend had been having an hour lesson since day one because that's what the teacher offered. But then it became a torture and he gave up...

Thanks everyone we are sticking with 30 minutes for now, she's only 8 and its Grade 1, I'm aware of what theory she needs to know (thank-you for the print-out online violin tutor lady) and we still have two months until the exam.

30 min is ample for Grade 1, and age 8. My kids have always had 30 min lessons - from grade 1 to grade 8, aged 5-16. I've always done aural.at home with them though, they never did it with their teacher.

At 8, 30 minutes playing time was enough for my DD but the lessons were 45 mins for all the other things like aural, theory and the all important stickers!

Definitely 30 mins. My 8 and 13 year old have 30 mins for grade 5 and 8, although I really should change to 45 mins for the older one I think 😬

30 mins is fine at that age.

I think my DD had 2o mins group lesson and did OK.

She now has a 30 min lesson and will take grade 5 this year...I may ask for extra time for aural which she struggles with due to lack of tuition rather than talent, although her past teachers seemed to think she could either do it or not.
