My son wants to learn how to play chess. He and I would need to learn together any recommendations for good books?

Join your local chess club! Most clubs contain lots of under 12s boys and girls and lots of over 40 men - but not many "in betweeners"!

Oh and watch a few Ben Finegold videos together on Youtube! He's great for kids and adults alike.

I've heard good things about the DragonBox app, "Magnus Kingdom of Chess' I think it's called, not to teach the strategy and higher levels of the game, but just as an introduction to get used to the pieces and moves and basic ideas. Not used it myself though, but I have used other DragonBox apps and they are good, so I'd expect this to be as well.

We taught him the basic moves ourselves then DS had the Gary Kasparov one, Checkmate, first. He then moved on to one called "How to beat your Dad at chess" and another in the same series. One of the latter 2 was for openings I think, and the other for end games.

There's something to be said for starting with a small book. Less intimidating. But I haven't seen many others to compare ours to.
