DofE Bronze, what does it involve?

Also is it possible for a child to sign up without parent consent because dd2 seems to have a place despite me never attending a meeting or signing anything.

Dd2 has ASD and hypermobility and attends a SN school. Letter arrived today so I was a bit shocked (didn’t even know her school do DofE), I have spoken to dd and she wants to do it but I have no idea what’s involved as I haven’t been told anything by school, I’m not even sure if she can physically do it due to her hypermobility?

There is loads of information here www.dofe.org/do/basicinformation but each young person will spend the equivalent of 1hr a week for 3 months doing each of the following:
learning/improving a skill,
doing/improving at a physical activity
and volunteering,
they need to do one of them for 6 months but can chose which. These elements can be done one at a time or consecutively and participants have until they are 25 to finish.
They also need to undertake an expedition that is 2 days and 1 night.
The award is accessible and should be an achievable challenge for each participant adjustments will be made to take account of your daughters additional needs.

Thank you. Can the 1 hour a week be done in school time? My dd’s School is a hour away so she doesn’t get much spare time as doesn’t get home until late. She does quite a lot of outdoor activities as I’m quite outdoorsy 🤣 but walking she finds harder due to her bendy ankles. I have been sent a discount card for various outdoor shops to buy her any walking gear she may need 😐.

I would talk to school about how they are organising it, it should be voluntary and therefore not in compulsory curriculum time but especially in a special needs environment doing it in school time may be one of the adjustments to make it accessible. Things like volunteering in the school library at lunchtime or doing sport/chess/computer programming at lunchtime or with a lunchtime or after school club do count anyway.

Looking on the school website it seems school do some activities in school time. I will call the school tomorrow and get more details. Will also find out how she managed to apply without my input 🤣

She should have required parental consent to sign up. That aside, she should be able to do the award with hypermobility. With the expeditions it is possible to apply for "variations" which can account for various physical conditions.

DofE, in the special school I work in, is entirely done in school time, for a variety of reasons. Definitely get in touch with school to see how they organise it.
