Need a new violin. What to do?

DD is at grade 5 level. We bought her a new 3/4 Gliga (£300) just 6 months ago. Her teacher said she will atleast get 2 years out of it (DD is small for her age). She suddenly had a growth spurt !! Her teacher sent a note saying she now needs a 4/4 violin.

All the violins she had before the gliga were Stentors. They were ok, but her Gliga sounds so good! We planned to buy her a Gliga Gama when she is ready for full size. We are moving to the US next year. Gama is £900 here (or even cheaper) and $900 there.

WWYD? Get her a cheaper 4/4 or just buy Gliga Gama here?

Don't go for a cheaper violin! It's not worth it. A beautiful sounding violin is very motivating for a young player, especially for Grade 5 + level. Can you not trade in the Gliga for a bigger Gliga?

Btw, I really sympathise. But look at it this way - if you get this right, you won't need to worry about this (except for a bow) for years.

Can you trade in the one you just bought or sell it on? There must be a market for them

Thanks all. She doesn’t have a hard commute, she walks or sometimes takes the bus for a 1 mile journey.

I think I’ll just sell this one.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the ‘brand’. Your best bet would be to go to a violin shop with a budget in mind and see what they have available.

Second going to a violin shop and letting her try the ones they have on offer. You should be able to trade in the current model.

Listen, if you are moving to the US let me tell you that no one, and I mean no one, buys their violin here. They looked at me like I had 3 heads because DS owned his violin. In London we bought his violin and rented a piano. Here everyone rents their violin and buys a piano (piano rental for a year costs the same as buying a good digital weighted one!). The upshot though is that DS plays a really beautiful instrument. We looked into buying it when we leave (in 2020) and it costs 3000 dollars. GULP.
Take a look at Johnson’s String Instruments online.
