We recently moved to Edinburgh from Midlands. My son is 10 years old. He was attending keyboard classes at Yamaha School of music.Trying to find a similar class in Edinburgh. All music schools seem to tech Piano not keyboard. Confused on how to proceed. Is there a recommended keyboard tutor? Are piano and keyboard classes the same?

Have you tried the local music service? Is there any reason he doesn’t want to learn piano; must it be keyboard? It’s a genuine question.

Try Rimmers on Elm Row down from the Playhouse. They used to offer tuition on keyboard. I don't know about the difference between keyboard and piano lessons. Sorry. Also musicteachers.co.uk

Have tried asking Morningside school of music. This is their response,

" I would strongly recommend moving him across from keyboard to piano. Keyboard does exist at high school, but it is looked upon in a lesser light, where as piano is the ‘proper’ way of playing the keyed instrument".

Its just that he has already been learning keyboard for two years and we bought an expensive keyboard too. So was wondering is that the right way to go.

Rimmers school of music have stopped the classes as they do not have a teacher at the moment.

It's certainly very direct but I would agree with that: learn the piano, then you have more options.

Could you part-ex the keyboard for a digital piano?

I don't agree entirely as I think keyboard has its own place in music making.

Mine does classical music so it's so easy for me to start telling the importance of learning piano and acquiring the 'proper' techniques. But I also know DCs who enjoy non-classical music and, although classical background could be useful, I think it's not so essential. It depends on what kind of music they enjoy and what they like to get out of their learning. You just have to think if it worth the pain to make a switch.

I agree piano will bring you more options and playing keyboard with piano background would be possible whereas the other way round would be incredibly hard. So if you see taking up piano on the horizon, or learning keyboard as an alternative to piano, yes he should move to piano sooner than later though.
