Learning trombone but can't practise?

DD's learning trombone at school but isn't allowed to take it home to practise. How will she progress?

DD is doing flute this year and can't bring it home to practise either. Given that she apparently hasn't even got it to make a sound yet, I'm not holding great hopes for much progress so have resigned myself to stumping up for private lessons if she likes it (not necessarily on the flute either).

These are free whole class lessons (as part of an ensemble) though rather than small group or 1:1 when I would be making a bit more of a fuss about either being able to bring the instrument home to practise or have access at school.

Our 8 year old is learning trombone this year and we bought a second hand one for £45 on a local selling site - (we were quite lucky but bargins are out there) would that be an option/Christmas present?

Also our local town brass band offer free instrument loan and lessons - again worth looking into in case there is similar in your area.

If no instrument becomes available there are a few you tube videos about learning the trombone which focus on making 'buzzy lips' - worth a try as well.

This is a free after school club, there are 12 of them (I just watched a video and counted).

You can get plastic trombones that are repetitively inexpensive. I know an internationally regarded jazz player who uses one.

I definitely look out for a second hand one puss, thanks for the tip.

Does your county music service hire instruments still? Ours does, very cheaply, especially for 'rare' instruments like trombone.

Local brass bands also a brilliant resource.

I'll look into it, thanks. 😊

Agree with all those suggestions.

I have two trombone players, they both have pbones as well as their 'proper' instruments, they are really good (and you can take early grade exams on them), I'd recommend buying a metal mouth piece though. Ds2's was especially useful when he broke his wrist, he could still lift and play his pbone.

Its a brillian instrument to play - lots of opportunities in jazz and classical.

We’ve hired one from our county music service - £18 for a term. Not having lessons through them, just rang up on the off chance. They were happy to hire one out.

PhilomenaButterfly · 08/11/2018 11:01

I've emailed ours MrsBobton.

Thanks everyone, this is so helpful! 😊

We bought a second hand bone from a music shop. It’s fine for up to end of Grad3 according to DS teacher

PhilomenaButterfly · 10/11/2018 21:08

That's another option. Thanks!
