November Music Thread

Welcome to all musicians/ parents of musicians, young and 'mature', beginners and advanced, plus everything in between. This is one of the nicest corners of Mumsnet and the music threads were started for my older daughter towards the beginning of her musical journey, 7 years ago. Everybody on the thread was a beginner once!

I have recently seen "we're not a musical family", "I'm not musical" on here quite a lot, and would like to gently challenge that... perhaps you may not have found the right instrument/ teacher yet, or have no desire to play, but I think that everyone is musical. It's not a special something that is limited to certain individuals, although of course everyone's aptitude and natural ceiling varies. I have had the pleasure of teaching almost 1000 people to read and play music now, ranging in age from 3 to 96 and incorporating a range of additional needs, and I think they all got something positive from their lessons! What our young musicians most need from us - whether we play ourselves or not - is lots of encouragement, time and space to practise, and of course the constant taxi service and financial support we give to their lessons and ensembles!

I have two DDs, Goo The Energy Conserver (flute and piano, lapsed recorder and picc player) who is pretty lazy and complacent at the moment and just wants to enjoy her life, and Rara The Awkward (clarinet, cello, recorder) who tries hard... when it suits her! We have nothing special lined up this term, but possibly piano and clarinet exams for next term. Goo claims she wants to dust off her recorders and theory books to get another couple of Grade 8s before she leaves school. I'll believe that when it happens.

Over to you.

We bought a digital piano a year ago to replace our (really really awful bought off eBay) upright. We went to the Yamaha store in central London (if you have never been there, it is the most amazing place ever!!!!) and ds2 tried them all - including the £100,000 one. We were very impressed with the sound. We ended up with one that cost around £700 (and they price matched an online price when I googled it standing right there in the store). DS2 is about to take grade 6 piano and I was assured it would continue to be good enough for him for a few more grades at least. We do love the way it sounds and I love how slimline it is in our living room.

Mendingfences · 06/11/2018 05:59

We have a Yamaha digital here, although a fairly simple one. We don't have any 'serious' pianists in the house but it works fine for the 2 kids who have lessons and for theory stuff without taking up too much room. Headphones are great for late/early practise sessions and yes different voices can be a motivator, ds certainly will do repeats checking out different voices without noticing they are repeats

Welcome to everyone who's joined in over the last week! We are Yamaha fans here too - baby grand downstairs and an Arius YDP-162 upstairs. We also have an amazing piece of software called Pianoteq which models lots of the big names - Steinway, Grotrian, Bluthner, Petrov etc. We run this plugin using Logic X with a Roland A-88 midi keyboard. www.pianoteq.com/

We had a great day with DS at JD on Saturday - there's a lovely friendly feel to the place and I love the fact that we can sit in on rehearsals, which we weren't able to do at the last place.

In other news, DS has been given a chance to join the school symphony orchestra, which is a superb opportunity for him.

You might recall that DS came home from school at HT without clothes. I now have a small collection of things that he's forgotten to take back with him, including socks, underwear and toothbrush charger. We'll get the hang of it eventually! Grin

minisnowballs: my now 15 year old daughter blames me for:

  1. not sending her early enough to a good singing teacher (she never gave any indication she wanted singing lessons),
  2. that she is playing piano instead of keyboard (we have inherited a really good piano at home),
3.that she is playing trumpet (she wanted to play trombone but didn't know they were called thrombone rather than trumpet, and she never said anything tell may years later).
minisnowballs · 06/11/2018 11:59

Ha - foundoutyet.... that makes dd1 sound reasonable! Apparently I should have known that dd2 wanted to play the bassoon before she had even seen one....She's grudgingly sticking to flute and cello for now.

TaggieOHara · 06/11/2018 11:59

Foundout - that made me laugh. We are just embarking on our teenage journey with DS1...

minisnowballs - You are not alone... if you find the solution to how to keep your temper in the face of such extreme music practice induced provocation, please post it here!

Have a Brew in the meantime.

For lurking and not so lurking drummers out there video of Yamaha Futurebeat final if anybody interested:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwZGn6n8CGQ&

Also Young Drummer of the Year for under 16s open for entry for another week or so.

Violinboymum · 06/11/2018 13:42

Foundoutyet, this is too funny. My 8 year old constantly blames me for everything. For example he is not good enough violinist because his parents are not a ballerina and a lawyer like David Garrett’s parents. He is not good at piano because his parents are not Chinese. If only he had a violin like Nicola Benedetti or a grand piano or a professor for a teacher. Etc etc etc.

littleladsdad · 06/11/2018 14:17

Thanks for the Futurebeat link Herts, looks like a fantastic day was had by all.

Trumpetboysmum · 06/11/2018 15:01

Good news he might be able to do some bits of composition at home . I think it just depends on the school . Right off to his theory exam now Hmm

littleladsdad · 06/11/2018 16:38

Good luck to your ds Trumpet!

TaggieOHara · 06/11/2018 16:49

Fingers crossed for trumpet and others doing their theory exams this week!

Lotsofmilkonesugar · 06/11/2018 17:30

Yes, fingers crossed for everyone sitting the theory paper today! We have two extremely tired DCs after taking part in the music for youth prom at the Albert Hall yesterday celebrating 125 years of the BSO. There are some lovely photos on the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Facebook page if any other Southerly posters had children there and want to have a look 🙂

catkind · 06/11/2018 18:39

Bwahahaha, kids really are the gift that keeps on giving. I'm LOL at various of the reasons us parents are to blame but this one particularly takes the biscuit!

Good luck to the theory-ers!

TheFirstOHN · 06/11/2018 19:39

Hope today went well for the theory candidates.

Ds said theory was fine !! Here’s hoping Smile 3 days of the school show now followed by his NCO concert on Sunday !! So he’s happy as just doing music is what he lives for and I’ll be pleased when this week is over !!

Doubleup · 07/11/2018 09:18

I'd forgotten that the theory exams were this week. Hope it went well for all the minis.

LooseAtTheSeams · 07/11/2018 09:49

I also hope it went well for the mini theory exam-takers! DS2 has only just started the G5 book so not facing that challenge quite yet!

here's another blame. Grin

It's my fault dd is only just doing grade 5 Piano as how could she be expected to learn without a Steinway grand like she has at school Grin

catkind · 07/11/2018 17:43

Darn, one week after teacher assuring me she has no intention of starting exam music with DS... he comes home learning exam music. Someone has misunderstood someone there. Really don't think he's ready or prepared to put in the work to get ready in any reasonable time frame.

woolleybear · 07/11/2018 18:34

Having a bit of a mare here today, pad on bassoon has gone the day before a concert. I'm now going to try and fashion one from God knows what...
