Price for swimming lessons

I really need to get my boys to learn how to swim, they're 4 and 5. We take them every now and again but definitely not enough for them to learn how to swim.

So I've just been enquiring about swimming lesson prices. Only one has come back to me. It's a group swimming class, so not one to one, and it's £120 for 10 lessons. I'm not too far away from London so I guess that hikes the price up a bit, but does that sound reasonable?

That seems about right for quality small group lessons around here. (Also SE not London). We've paid similar for either small pool with only one lesson happening and max 1:6 ratio (usually more like 1:4), or big pool with several lessons going on but a 1:3 or 1:2 ratio with a teacher on the side and assistants in the pool. Half that for big sports centre lessons with a 1:10 or more ratio.

I don't mind a bigger group once they've basically got the hang of swimming and are doing multiple lengths and all swimming at the same time. I think it's a false economy when they're just starting and really need individual attention to get set right.

As catkind says really, it's on the pricier side, but not necessarily paying over the odds if they are good lessons with low ratios.

We paid £7 a lesson for groups of up to 7 in the SE. I think our local council lessons are similar. Paid that for 6 years for DD, averaging just over one badge a year, and got to the point where she stopped improving. It might have worked out better value to have paid more somewhere else.

I have found the more expensive swim schools have very efficient admin! You have to chase and chase to book in at the local council pool.

I pay £57 a term for my 4 year old. It's 30 min lesson once a week in a class of around 8-10 but with 3 helpers/instructors in the eater

Lollyb86 · 16/05/2018 07:29

Water not eater Hmm

£52 for 8 lessons near Gatwick for us

Miloarmadillo2 · 16/05/2018 07:32

£5 a lesson here (SW) for local council groups (up to 8 children). We have done intensive weeks at £12 for 1:2 lesson or £18 1:1, so unless that is a very small class of 2/3 I think it's expensive.

Aprilmightbemynewname · 16/05/2018 07:33

£40 for ten (up NE)!!

milkysmum · 16/05/2018 07:34

Is that a private swimming centre? At our local council leisure centres the price is £18 per month. At the private pool much closer to the price you stated. I actually chose to put the children in a swimming club. It is run by volunteers, they use the local pool and it costs £12.75 per month and then can go to both the Monday and Friday night lessons- it's a bargain! They are all fully trained swim teachers.

We pay like £55 for a block that's usually around 9-10 weeks long. Between about 4-6 kids in the class at the lower levels, instructor in the water with them at the beginner level.

That's at our local university pool (they've got an adjustable floor so can make the pool shallow for lessons) who have a swim school based there and the quality of the lessons blows the ones from the private swim school you were at before running tiny group lessons out of the water.

MrsJacksonBrodieTheSecond · 09/06/2018 15:02

I pay £14 per half hour lesson but that’s one to one. When I lived in the SE I was paying £15 per lesson and he was in a group of 10. He hardly made any progress at all but the difference since he’s had private lessons is amazing.

Equimum · 16/06/2018 08:22

My five year old does a group lesson, and it’s £11 for a half hour session (£132/ term). My almost three year old does a parent and toddler class, and that is £10/ session (£110 for slighter shorter term).

The only place that was cheaper when we looked, was the public swimming pools, but we found that really overwhelming (lots of lessons taking place at the same time, little attention, busy changing rooms etc).

bollocksitshappenedagain · 16/06/2018 08:24

If that's each I'd say it's a bit high. If it's for both ok. You could consider doing a 2:1 private lesson - they would be swimming a lot quicker.

EnglandKeepMyBones · 16/06/2018 08:26

Ouch! I forget how expensive the SE is. We pay £9 for a one to one lesson run by the council, then £2.50 for a small group lesson run by the local swimming club. ASA insurance and competition fees are also subsidised heavily. That's North East though.

turkeyboots · 16/06/2018 08:29

That's steep. I paid £20 a month for weekly lessons in the council pool, 1 teacher and up to 10 kids. And it ran year round apart from Christmas.
Moved to a smaller class which was 4 kids per teacher, plus a helper in the water with the stage 1 and 2 kids. £27 a month through the local swimming club.

Sabulous · 16/06/2018 08:32

We pay £22 per month for council leisure centre swimming lessons, just went up, in London borders. About 7 in the class.
When we did swimming lessons when DD was a baby it was about £15 per lesson! But totally worth it as it was fab!

Stompythedinosaur · 26/06/2018 15:10

That seems expensive to me, but I'm not in London. We pay £5.50 for a group lesson or £16 for 1:1 30 mins.
