I thought it might be helpful to share our highs/lows/questions/thoughts in one place. Who’s joining me!?

DD(12) is a fairly good swimmer at an old, traditional, small club. She swam all strokes last year at Regionals, albeit quite an easy region, and we expect her to do similar this year if she gets her act together.

She started squad aged 8 1/2. She had the opportunity to swim 3 x 2 hour sessions. One finished at 9:15pm so we often used to skip that. By a year later she was probably swimming all 6 hours unless we were away.

She moved to senior squad aged 10 1/2, gradually increasing her swims as the coach thought she could handle it. In theory she swims 9 hours, but invariably there is a weekend session that gets cancelled due to open meets or we can't make due to school stuff....we probably average out at about 7 hours. We don't have too many competitive galas, just a few open meets/Counties etc.

When looking at how "busy" a young swimmer is you really should take other sporting/active stuff into account. Somehow DD also managed to fit in 4 1/2 hours of dance classes alongside 5 hours of games/hockey a week. Obviously we've dropped a lot of that in the past 18 months. They do need some rest and plenty of sleep. Sometimes they just need to sit and watch Youtube.

Whatever you do, I would urge you to cut it all back if you find DC is getting a lot of colds/bugs or is getting too many aches and pains.

Belated congrats to minieccles. 100 Fly takes a lot of skill!

DD had one good day, one underwhelming (but she had a busy week at school). On the plus side we finished in time to have a lovely Sunday lunch I didn't have to cook and it felt very festive with everything lit up.

9yo amount of swimming varies massively ime!

We have 9yo still in swim school doing half hour a week. We have some in lower 2 squads doing 2x1 hr a week. Then we have them in the lower top squads doing 3 hours swimming and 1 hr land training.
We are a smaller club with limited pool hours. We have a few that by 11 are doing 7 hrs swimming and 1 hr land training. Top squad do 9 hrs swimming and 1 hr land training. That's the maximum amount of pool time we can offer. These swimmers make counties and regionals and even a few make nationals. We are an extremely tough county times wise too.

Our coaches always say pool time isn't everything it's what they do and the programme aims that make the difference.

I agree with above poster who said I wouldn't be doing more than 3-4 sessions a week with a 9yo. Not if you're also doing other clubs/sports and/or competing alongside this too.

Thanks everyone, he is very happy!

Our training is low compared to most from what I gather, my DS had just turned 9 when he joined and did 2 hours a week, now at 11 he does 3 hours. I think the highest squad do 9 or 10.

itsgettingweird · 13/12/2019 21:40

Eccle similar to us

QueenofLouisiana · 15/12/2019 06:41

Morning All! Day two of a meet for us today- got to love an 8am warm up.
Trying to think back, I think DS did about 3.5 hrs a week at 9, going up by another hour at about 10.
Did any one get to the finals of Arena League?

estherfrewen · 15/12/2019 08:53

No we don’t do it as a club. Not enough swimmers post-12!

Fourmagpies · 15/12/2019 14:03

I don't know if ours did, no social media posts which I'm guessing probably means we didn't this year. We had to pull our b team as lots away or sick (coaches and swimmers) so the a team was actually a mix of a and b swimmers. My DS isn't quite fast enough for either team (which I'm quite relieved about! And that he's also not fast enough for the LC meet next weekend at the other end of the county!)

Madcats · 16/12/2019 11:34

Our club dropped out of Arena League. We'd struggled to get enough good male swimmers and we'd gone through a phase of having to compete miles and miles away. It's a shame as we don't really get many chances to compete these days.

Only 2 more swims for us this decade (DD pointed this out)! I think I might have to send DD off to a public swim session or 2 before the New Year to keep her sane.

WidowTwonky · 18/12/2019 22:40

My DS is 10 and trains 9.5 hrs per week (there are additional morning sessions too but we don’t attend). This includes 2x land training.
At 9 he did 6 hrs per week

QueenofLouisiana · 19/12/2019 21:00

We are going away tomorrow for Christmas, so I hope you and your swimmers have a wonderful time over the next week or so.

DS will need to do some gym time as were always straight into counties when we get back. Sadly, it won’t all be eat, drink and be merry!

estherfrewen · 20/12/2019 08:38

Have a lovely Christmas everyone! We are up at 4.30 am Xmas Eve for full squad training and Christmas breakfast- ho ho ho....

Swimmum1206 · 20/12/2019 09:22

Been reading these posts for a while, but not posted on this thread before. Just wanted to wish you all a good break and hope you get sometime away from poolside!!

DS swims with an extremely high pressure club and has achieved some fantastic PBs recently. He didn’t really gel with his previous coach and felt totally discouraged. Since he moved up a squad with a different coach earlier in the year, he’s been so much happier and it’s shown in his times.

He was picked for Arena league this year. It’s the first time he’s been selected for a good couple of years and has more swims at Counties than he’s ever had, so much so, he had to choose which events to do rather than go for anything he had a time for!!!

estherfrewen · 20/12/2019 09:40

Hi and welcome, swimmum Smile

Sounds like your DS has had a great year!

QueenofLouisiana · 20/12/2019 11:48

@Swimmum1206 have a great Christmas, welcome to our corner of the pool!

Eccle80 · 20/12/2019 12:42

Hope everyone has a good Christmas and enjoy the break!

QueenofLouisiana · 01/01/2020 11:23

Happy new year SwimParents! May the sets feel shorter, the poolside cooler and the raffles be in your favour!

Lots of good wishes to your swimmers this year.

estherfrewen · 01/01/2020 15:37

Happy New Year everyone! Start of a new swimming decade - may the PBs tumble !

mondaywine · 01/01/2020 21:05

Fascinating reading what your children do. Not in England so no County times/events but a quick google made interesting reading! Just now my 10 year old DD does 2 sessions totalling 3 1/2 hrs in total. She will be transitioning up a squad over next few months (they do it small steps at a time) and will go to 3 swimming and 1 land training session a week totalling 7 1/2 hrs. She will be the youngest in her new squad but is so excited at the prospect. She looked at her times over the last 12 months and was blown away to realise that she’s taken between 11 and 16 seconds off every PB since last year at this time.
Looking forward to the 12 months ahead!

QueenofLouisiana · 01/01/2020 22:54

Welcome @mondaywine it’s good to have you with us!

ealingwestmum · 02/01/2020 10:04

Happy new year everyone, and welcome to those new on the thread!

First day back in pool today, after a looong break, injury related as per usual. The impact of back to back complaints requiring lots of physio now taking its toll, and this year I think is a make of break year as to whether she can hang in there.

Lovely news on the recent performance of everyone's DC and PBs!

itsgettingweird · 03/01/2020 15:43

Happy new year everyone!

We've had a few 2 hour sessions over the holidays keeping us ticking over!
Back to full schedule as of today and open meet Sunday! Meet is more a "where are we" meet rather than a targeted meet to set the seasons goals.

QueenofLouisiana · 04/01/2020 09:18

@itsgettingweird lots of good wishes for tomorrow’s gala. I think a competition this weekend would finish DS off.

Anyone else competing this weekend?

itsgettingweird · 04/01/2020 21:37

It may finish me off! Morning training today and then up at 6 again tomorrow for OM!

QueenofLouisiana · 04/01/2020 23:18

Brew for the morning. Wine for tomorrow night.

estherfrewen · 05/01/2020 07:38

Best of luck, @itsgettingweird

Gala yesterday and today for us. Very average swims - all just outside pb and a bit of a slog if I’m being honest! Roll on 5 o’clock. Only good thing is it isn’t far away!
