Double bass is a huge instrument - dd is 8 yo. She enjoys playing in orchestra but not motivated to practise...at the same time seems not wanting to give up. Recently we were talking that perhaps starting a different instrument so that ater she can have a slightly different experience...and then see what she would enjoy. How did you appproach choosing a particular brass instrument?

Dd started with recorder and found moving on to saxophone relatively easy.
It has the advantage of being portable and this facilitates busking and being in a band.

Ds started on cornet at 8 as has his sister. He now mostly plays trumpet but cornets are good to start on as they're smaller . Once you've got the hang of it my 2 found it fairly quick to get started with .

Try a few as the mouthpieces and fingering vary. One may feel more comfortable to use than others.

Definitely try a few.

DS1 started on trumpet at 8 and got Grade 5 before switching to trombone and tuba which suited him more. He could never manage French horn.

DS2 also tried trumpet at 8 and couldn't get a good sound, switched to trombone after 3 months and flew with that straight away.

It really depends on their mouths. I think trumpet/cornet is manageable by most but some people just can't get much out of a French horn and some find the big trombone mouthpiece overwhelming.

DD1's teacher allocates pupils to instruments largely based on mouth shape, pupil preference and what they can get a sound out of. According to DD at least, most people have lips and mouths too big for trumpets and cornets - she loves her trumpet but plays it interchangeably with her band cornet Grin.

Also worth considering that trumpets are a lot more portable than tubas. There doesn't seem to be much difference in ensemble opportunities for different brass instruments but that might just be where we are.

Youtube is your friend! Your DD will be much more motivated if she falls in love with the instrument and the type of music you can play on it.

So first genre - brass band, orchestral (different and pretty much non-overlapping set of instruments, so you choose one or the other).

Then individual instruments.
