Happy New Year!

This is the new thread for our continuing (6 year old) conversation about all things to do with music - lessons, exams, auditions, theory, scales, practice and whatever else you want to talk about.

I am Waffle, teacher of woodwind, amateur composer, and unpaid consultant watching and commenting on all sorts of woodwind videos that people send my way! I am mum to Goo 12, and Rara 9, who both play instruments, do South West Music School and NCO. Goo plays flute and piano, and has Grade 8 and Grade 5 pending for some time this year. Rara plays cello and clarinet - working within Grade 4 for both, but hasn't taken a clarinet exam since Grade 1, and wants to do Grade 3 this coming term. She's way behind with Theory, so it's theory boot camp again this week. We start back to school late (Jan 8th) so that's good.

Trumpetboysmum The A level timetable looks nothing like that for GCSE, DS has 4.5 hours per week per subject, one day he has a single lesson all day. another he's just there in the morning, a third he's just there in the afternoon. The saving grace is that college is very near my mother's so with a bit of planning I can visit there and drop off/pick up the child. It's not what I imagined before he went, I thought I was signing up for transport to/from the bus stop.

I know it's always so tricky - it was actually easiest when they were both really little and went to day nursery Smile even though that didn't always seem easy at the time

Hi all, here we have DS(16) in Y11, a keen trumpet and cornet player, grade 8 working towards diploma, in several bands including concert band and youth brass band.

Friend has just got a place at Purcell and we're wondering if there's still time to apply to Purcell and/or Chetham's for sixth form.

Could be worth a try? Any advice and experience very welcome.

Always worth trying- Chets has advice auditions all year round I believe. Not too late for 6th form.
There’s also a new February music thread x

Thanks for the encouragement Paulweller 😊

The advice auditions at Chet's sound like they could be a good place to start? Or, before that, send them an email?

Will search out the February thread!

Paulweller11 · 11/02/2018 19:47

Yes send them an email first to arrange the advice audition- they are very friendly, and will give advice if they think their not ready- but sounds like he’s doing great.

Thanks so much PW, will get on to that over this half-term week 😊
