Can someone help me with a couple of questions about violin strings?

Dd's violin needs a new G string. I have no idea about violins so could really do with someone helping me with a couple of points - DH reckons he can change the string so if I order one online do I need to get a full set of strings (i.e. do all the strings need to be from the same manufacturer - because I have no idea what the make of the strings is at the moment) or can I just order the G string. Either way, can someone suggest what make of string(s) I should buy for a grade 5 level pupil? And last question the size of the violin is 3/4 - the strings seem to say 3/4-4/4 is this the right length? As you can see I am somewhat lost.Confused

Changing the string is not rocket science, so I'm sure your DH could manage. You put the end with the little metal circle thing into the groove by the adjuster, thread it over the bridge, along the fingerboard and nut, then feed it into the peg. Turn the peg gently to tighten it. Remember, it will take a few days to settle and will inevitably go flat when first put on.

You can buy strings separately or a set. It's up to you. You don't need matching strings, but there is a website whose name I have forgotten where you can look at the coloured thread at the end below the bridge and it will tell you the manufacturer.

Some strings are suitable for both 3/4 and 4/4 size instruments, others need the right size. You could ask the teacher which brand they recommend; I think last time I bought some for DD I got Dominant, but I may have dreamed that...

Dominant was the brand to have when i played the violin as a child - more expensive and better sound quality. If your DD is grade 5 she should be able to change her own string.

A dominant G will be fine, assuming she has adjusters. No need to change any others. The string will slip in pitch a lot and you will need to keep tuning it with the peg very frequently for the first day or two.

This is a bit late... but it does help if all the strings on an instrument are the same brand, although some people may choose to use a different e string. All strings have a different resonance and sound, and it can be really difficult and odd to play if they are very mismatched.

Dominant are a good make, but I've started using Pirastro Tonica, which are just as good if not better IMHO and we're cheaper when I bought them. If possible, dd should have a spare set in her case. A bit like a clarinetist would always have a spare reed.

Re changing strings, you should only ever change one string at a time - even if you need a whole new set, change them one at a time to avoid problems with the bridge and sound-post.

Hope you got sorted!
