November Music Thread

New month, new thread! This is a place for musicians and parents of musicians, from complete beginners to experienced and everything in between, to talk about everything to do with music! Previous threads have covered exams, practice, scales, instrument hire and purchase, theory, composition, aural woes, auditions, scholarship preparation and much more.

I started these threads when my 12 year old daughter Goo was 6 and preparing for Grade 1. I never thought we'd still be going, 6 years later! I appreciated all the advice I was given back then, and try to repay that when I can.

Goo plays the flute and piano (she has been learning the piano for 18 months but has yet to perform - ever) and has no exams lined up at the moment. I also have Rara who is 9, and working towards her third Grade 3, on the clarinet. The other two were on the cello and recorder. She's more interested in art and reading, and currently swims five times a week.

I am a teacher of woodwind, and Wednesday is my day from you-know-where... full-on from 6.30 am until 10 pm, and about to get worse!!

Mini, pursuing a solo career would be more suitable to your DD me think. I didn't know anything about clarinet but having read all the comments made by those who know the world, it seems like your little one's progress is extraordinary.

Floot if you look on the dfes music and dance scheme page they list all the places that offer advanced musical training as well as the jds in London. Ds attends Aldeburgh Young Musicians at snape maltings as that's closest to us and the emphasis on creativity was a good fit

Very long time poster with an alternate account. The child has applied for conservatoire and has audition dates two and three weeks away. My husband died suddenly on Sunday night and the funeral will fall smack in the middle of the two dates. He would have been absolutely livid about that and very upset about the lack of practice this week. Hopefully the music teacher will help us decide the way forward at the lesson next week. I would rather just go for it and plead extenuating circumstances rather than it slip to the second round of auditions after Christmas but then it's not me that has to play.

Hi all, my ds who is 11 had a pre audition assessment at Junior Guildhall last December and loved it but has decided to leave it for another year or so.

Kutik could I ask which JD you son goes to? Perhaps pm me? Your son and mine sound quite similar in their musical ability and both play violin.

disorganisedmummy · 03/11/2017 18:20

Fitter, so sorry to hear your news 💐

Floottoot · 03/11/2017 18:38

Thanks, Kutik and Trumpet - I'll do some research about JD equivalents in our region. He has a fantastic cello teacher, plays in one of the county orchestras, is a music scholar in an excellent cathedral school...and has pro musicians for parents, so I'm not sure what else I'm looking for, really, but my own time at a JD was so wonderful, it's hard not to want the same for him.

Fitter, I am desperately sorry for your loss.xxx

Awful news Fitter, best wishes to you and your family.

Kutik73 · 03/11/2017 19:43

Yes I know what you mean Floot. DS heard someone saying that Saturdays became the highlight of a week for most DCs at JD and he was wondering if it would happen to him also. His first day was at the end of September, so he is still very much a newby there, but yes it has happened to him already. Grin I hope there is something near where you live. Smile

Minimusiciansmama · 03/11/2017 19:50

floot my DD goes to our nearby JD equivalent, the MDS funded possibility nearest to us. Long term, she'll audition for RNCM or RCM. Further down the line!

Wafflenose · 03/11/2017 20:37

DH and I took advantage of the dc being at band practices tonight to go and see the RPO perform. The programme included the Planet Suite and The Lark Ascending. Fantastic and heart-breaking all at the same time.

Mendingfences · 04/11/2017 06:56
