We spend £100 per dc! Fortunately some of the activities mean we don't need childcare after school but I was still surprised when I added it up.

£322 for 2 children so £160 each per month.
Doesn't include equipment
I would imagine people doing a lot of dance or music lessons pay an awful lot more! Music is very expensive I just have 1 child doing 1 instrument

Glowerglass · 11/08/2017 12:45

£72 All sport. Ouch.

mrsmayitstimetogo · 11/08/2017 12:47

music lessons are the killer here...

WhichJob · 11/08/2017 12:47

Music is expensive which is why mine don't have any music lessons which is a shame.

Mine covers; swimming, cubs, drama and football.

Too muchConfused. A couple of instruments and dance.

dairymilkmonster · 11/08/2017 12:54

music lessons £22, swimming £7, chess club £6 - ds1 aged 6

  • not sure he will do chess beyond xmas though, it hasn't gone too well so far, but he insisted on another try!

ds2 (2) does a toddler 'gymnastics' which is £4. It mainly involving running about or trampolining - not doing what the bloke running the session is demonstrating!

Madcats · 11/08/2017 13:06

Can I just do it for a week for one DD(10)
Music lessons £45
Dancing £15
Swimming £9
This excludes cost of sheet music, music exam fees, dance uniforms & shoes (ballet/character/tap) dance exam fees...swim gala fees to get county times...transport. Don't get me started on how much a "proper" costume and goggles cost. I am guessing this is another £300-£500 in a year.

On and then there are school trips, residentials and sports tours...

I am hoping expecting she will give up some of this when she goes to secondary school, simply because there won't be the time to fit it in.

That said, we can afford it, it keeps her fit and healthy, she has a very wide circle of friends and I am sure she try to spend every waking hour of this time watching youtube/playing computer games if she didn't have such interests.

GladGladys · 11/08/2017 13:11

£282 per month for 1 DD, including a tutor due to SEN. Doesn't include any equipment, badges, exams etc.

I was surprised when I added it up, but she enjoys all of them, and I have the time and money to be able to take her at the moment.

Approx. £50for each child. Mainly sport.

wendz86 · 11/08/2017 13:52

I was paying £25 a month for swimming and around £5 a week for both ballet so about £45 a month . She is starting tap with the same dance school in September and youngest is starting ballet so will be another £40 a month .

NeverTwerkNaked · 11/08/2017 21:35

£140 a month for dd (dance and theatre school are the big expenses)

About £100 a month for DS

That's term time, probably spend the same or more in the holidays on holiday camps etc

It's my incentive to put in extra hours at work (on my laptop when they are in bed!), and I feel lucky I can give them these opportunities. They've both chosen very different activities, and have a real passion for them.

WhichJob · 11/08/2017 21:40

I think my DC get a lot out of their activities too, DD would do every club going but DS would prefer to potter at home so he does less than DD, but swimming is non negotiable.

A lot, that's why I don't try to add it up, but 3dc with together 5 lots of music lessons, 7 lots of sportsactivites (ranging from £1/h to £21/h)

treaclesoda · 12/08/2017 08:57

Around £150 per month in total I think.

Paulweller11 · 12/08/2017 15:43

Piano and theory weekly £50
Drums £13.75 a week
Percussion £20 a week.....
Per month a lot!

nonicknameseemsavailable · 12/08/2017 16:57

hmm £100 for one and £120 the other I think

nonicknameseemsavailable · 12/08/2017 20:24

plus shoes etc as it is dancing. 4hrs of dancing each and violin for one. I do think it is worth it though. one is about to start a craft activity at school too in the autumn which is £5 a week I think. They would happily add loads more but they know there is a limit to funds and time. So they have learned that to add something they have to stop something generally. I think it makes them value what they do.

iamyourequal · 12/08/2017 20:47

Approx £176 per month. DC1 = £70: £30 football plus £40 music. DC2 = £104: £50 gymnastics, £40 music & £16 dance class. I don't mind any of that at all but get bit miffed at the cost of dance show costumes and tickets. We contribute a fair bit to football tournament costs too but feel this is worth it. It's only dancing that's a scam.

Stillwishihadabs · 12/08/2017 20:58

Oh god £260 a month dd horses and tutoring....it is childcare too

famousfour · 12/08/2017 21:09

About £120pm for DD2 which is Gym and multi sports class. £0 for the DS5 who is at school and too tired. Contemplating music but that is 💲💲

Minimusiciansmama · 13/08/2017 23:08

About £300 a month for dance and music

Wafflenose · 13/08/2017 23:17

I refuse to add it up!! DD1 is a serious musician. Her flute lessons cost £34 per WEEK, her NCO membership is something like £1400 per year, and her Centre of Advanced Training course is about £3600 per year. Fortunately, the latter is means tested and we only pay 10%, and her government scholarship covers the flute lessons and part of her NCO course fees. We pay for her piano lessons, netball and dodgeball clubs, and any other occasional stuff she wants to do. I taught her Recorder and Theory for a long time, so we saved a lot there.

DD2 has cello, swimming and art lessons, coming in at around £25 per week. She learns clarinet with me. If she wants to follow the same route as her sister, she can try out for the advanced training course and grant as well!

Both have always done free school clubs, such as choir, orchestra, chess and country dancing. DD1 has just left primary, and it's too early to know what she'll want to do at secondary. I suspect netball and more broken fingers will feature strongly!

Icouldbeknitting · 14/08/2017 10:04

I don't want to know, because once you do know then there's no going back from that knowledge.

se22mother · 14/08/2017 10:06

I agree icouldbe
