How much do you pay for music lessons?

My children play a few different instruments between them and the prices vary by instrument. The most expensive is £10 per hour more than the others.

So, if you don't mind sharing, what do you pay and where in the country are you? (I'm in South West Wales)

Piano, £13 for 30 minutes. We're in the NE.

Moominmammacat · 10/08/2017 17:28

£35 an hour, north London. But have paid £55 to a conservatoire teacher. My DS charges £15 for a half an hour and he's a recent music grad.

Ocies · 10/08/2017 17:36

£40 an hour for voice - Hampshire.

hapsburg · 10/08/2017 17:37

South East - £35, £40 and £60 per hour, although all teachers regularly teach over an hour without charging more. The £60 an hour is always at least an hour and a half.

Flimp · 10/08/2017 17:38

£10 for half hour cornet (just graduated music student though)

£12 for half hour piano

I think it's cheap!

We're in NW

vickibee · 10/08/2017 17:39

Ds has guitar lessons via school music service, £45 per term, half hour sessions

Ollycat · 10/08/2017 17:40

I pay £15 for 30 min violin lesson for my dd - best money I've ever spent on music lessons- my dd loves her teacher and is making great progress. Would happily pay more for this teacher.

MuseumGardens · 10/08/2017 17:40

£126 per term

NatalieRushman · 10/08/2017 17:41

£20 hour for piano and voice, but she usually charges more. We've just been with her for years, and she hasn't put the price up for us for nearly a decade now. Violin is with another teacher and £30 an hour. We're in Scotland.

Ollycat · 10/08/2017 17:41

Sorry didn't give location we're in SE / Home Counties

MuseumGardens · 10/08/2017 17:42

Vickibee is your ds's lesson with other students?

MuseumGardens · 10/08/2017 17:43

Forgot to say we are Surrey

teaandakitkat · 10/08/2017 17:43

£22 for a 45 minute piano lesson, but that's the teacher coming to our house which costs more.
16 for a 30 minute drum lesson at the teachers house. It was £12 but he puts his prices up for grade 4 and up

se22mother · 10/08/2017 18:50

£33 for an hour of violin, £30 per hour clarinet. We are in London

vickibee · 10/08/2017 20:03

Yes there are two of them at approx same ability. I think it is value for money. He is asd and gets a lot of enjoyment from it. He learned shape of you recently and reckons he is ed sheeran!

LynetteScavo · 10/08/2017 21:16

Midlands - £13 for 20 mins, not one second more.

ReinettePompadour · 10/08/2017 21:18

Midlands- Oboe & Piano £30ph until grade 3 then £35 ph up to grade 6. Grade 7+ is £45ph.

LynetteScavo · 10/08/2017 21:20

Although DS has just stopped an hour long group lesson which was only £88 per term (10 lessons) which I thought was a bargain.

pussinwellyboots · 10/08/2017 21:22

Ds has school music service lessons cello was free now £5 for 30 mins in group of 2.
Keyboard £5 for 30 mins in group of 4.

raspberryrippleicecream · 11/08/2017 09:57

North West. Between £25 to £35 an hour depending on teacher. £25 is a recent music grad.

Only the most expensive one (voice) sticks to time, and also offers no refunds/flexibility for missed lessons. (I accept this is not unreasonable/uncommon).

Piano/theory teacher came and spent 90 minutes with DS2 going over theory last week, for free.

DD also has a 25 minute individual music lesson in school, £8 last year. This is secondary school. She achieved G8 with merit a couple of years ago so does work.

Pizzaexpressreview · 11/08/2017 10:01

13 for half hour lessons piano.
Will be 5 for half hour shared lesson on school for flute.

Thoth · 11/08/2017 10:02

Midlands, private piano and clarinet£16 per half hour, but very flexible and accommodating teachers. DD moves to secondary school in September and music service lessons will be £14 per half hour.

Didiplanthis · 11/08/2017 13:23

School music service Violin £14.50 for 20 mins individual which I think is very expensive but we couldn't fit any other out of School activity in and living rurally would struggle to find an accessible teacher. Group lessons are £ 9.80 for 30 mins but dd was practising more than the others and being held back so it was false economy.

Wenglishisfab · 11/08/2017 21:14

Thanks for all your replies.

Seems like I'm getting a bargain for guitar at £11 for a half hour.

Outside of school £35 per hour with experienced school. Inside school £268 per term this covers 40minute singing lesson every week, 30 minute group theory lesson and so other bits and pieces.
If they are seriously committed to music/drama you might as well empty your wallet and accept to be a taxi service. We added up weekly rehearsals, lessons etc the other day and excluding school shows DD will spend 16hours per week without doing any practice.
