July Music Thread

I was celebrating the end of a VERY busy week with a glass of Wine and realised it's now just past midnight, and therefore July! Have a new thread!

The music threads are for ALL musicians, young and old, beginners and advanced, and every style of music!

I have two DDs, Goo (11) who is currently stropping and eye-rolling her way through her last few weeks at primary school, and Rara (9) who is funny and creative. Goo is working towards Grade 8 Flute, and has been playing the piano for just over a year. She is refusing to take any exams or perform on it though. Rara has her Grade 3 Cello exam coming up soon, and is just moving beyond Grade 2 Clarinet now. Both played the recorder from age 3/4 and got to a really good level, but other than helping out with my school groups, they don't really play any more - they are particularly obsessed with the flute and clarinet.

I am a teacher of woodwind - currently about 80 recorder pupils (many group taught) in two schools, plus two private flute pupils and six private clarinet pupils.

Hi Ringle. Far North of England here.

Awwww Helen I'm welling up thinking about the end of the era for you!

Our Master of the Music left at Easter after 25 years. We had our end of the year BBQ today and it was strange without him.

I've caught up with the threads it better Waffle, stunning result for Rara?

raspberryrippleicecream · 16/07/2017 20:31

That should have been Rara! with an exclamation mark

Mendingfence, Norway is lovely too, with its fjords....
I remember, few years ago this guy won Eurovision song contest, is he any popular in Norway now?

se22mother · 16/07/2017 20:52

Ringle again apologies for being from south London, like Alex I was not born here. We are currently several thousand miles from London (and with no instruments - dreading Tuesday 's lessons with a week of no practice).

Greenleave the exam is over, sure she'll be fine. And I hope it works out with the new teacher

se22mother · 16/07/2017 20:53

Helen hope you had waterproof mascara Smile

This thread is moving so fast!!!

Lost track, sorry, welcome all the new comers!

Nothing to report here except that we've been away all day driving 2 and half hours there and same back and when dd got in to do her practice she exclaimed again that she loves piano. I tried to understand why as even though she never hated it she's never been in this state where she's actually playing more than she's been asked to and I'd like to keep it this way.

Well apparently piano is amazingly fun when there is no stress and no exams. And she loves it. She doesn't mind festivals but she doesn't want exam stress. So I made a promise of not trying to convince her to do an exam until grade 8 which she does agree she wants to take.

It is a sudden revelation, she's so motivated for her age and keeps telling me how fun it is.

ringle northerner here too. I do however sit with my 7 year old for daily two instrument practice, but she wouldn't have it any other way. She started piano aged 5 and not quite 18months ago got her first clarinet because she begged (and begged and begged....) to be allowed to start. She got a distinction for her G3 a couple of months ago. She's so proud of the fact she now has the practice skills that she can sometimes tackle a practice without me beside her but she likes to have me supporting her. She's absolutely reaping the rewards of the effort. We spent yesterday afternoon enjoying the most wonderful open air county ensemble concert, her first with this band. We sometimes have tears and tantrums but it's because she puts her heart and soul into it and is a major perfectionist.

fleur that's just so lovely to hear. The piano is always open in our house and is central to the lounge. She rarely walks by it without tinkering. It "fixes" her brain in a different way to clarinet. It just seems to have the ability to push a reset button in her sometimes!

NYJO is BRILLIANT! DS and I saw them last year (one of his jazz band colleagues is in part of their training band setup) and we left walking on air and grinning like idiots!

raspberryrippleicecream · 17/07/2017 08:04

Well done 2nd Flowers

NYJO is amazing. DS2 was lucky enough to do some workshops with them earlier this year, followed by a concert with NYJO playing on their own in the second half. Truly fab. DD was fortunate to have a similar opportunity 2 years ago.

Greenleave · 17/07/2017 08:12

Many congratulations the 2nd!

Fleurdelise · 17/07/2017 08:14

minimama ours is in the lounge also, I just rediscover a Disney piano book that I bought when dd just started piano lessons which were obviously too hard and now she's having a lot of fun sight reading them at random times.

stringchild · 17/07/2017 08:38

LooseAtTheSeams · 17/07/2017 08:39
