Modern grade 2 cornet pieces

My DD is doing a leavers concert for the end of primary school and has volunteered to do a piece on the cornet. I am trying to find her some modern upbeat pieces but she doesn't really have much of this kind of stuff in her music books. We found sheet music for Happy by Pharrell Williams online but she hasn't covered all the notes so that's not going to work.

Does anyone know of anything we could use? She has just passed her grade 2 so it needs to not be too difficult.
TIA

I am a clarinet and recorder specialist and no nothing about brass, but we have lots of Year 5-6 children at that sort of level where I work. I am happy to contact the Head of Music if you like, and ask for some suggestions of pieces children from our school have played in recent concerts. I'm sure she'll have some good ideas. It will probably take a couple of days for her to respond, as we have just broken up and I think she is on her way to relatives.

Wow, thank you for the offer waffle, that would be great.

She just emailed me, about something unrelated! I wrote her a long reply, and asked her. I'm sure she'll have some great ideas - we have quite a few cornet and trumpet players in the school, and she knows them a lot better than I do. One of them did play 'Close Every Door to Me' from Joseph recently - it's about Grade 1 level, and people tend to know that one.

Aargh, just spotted my horrendous mistake in my first post! I know nothing, clearly.

Does she have any music books at home? I'm wondering about something in Team Brass or Easy Winners? Maybe not current pop songs but there's quite a lot of modern upbeat ( and short !!) pieces in there

Hi trumpet. She does have those books and there are some upbeat songs in them but like you say, not particularly modern. It's for her leavers concert which is going to be full of the kids singing and dancing to recent pop tracks so thought if we could find something that would fit in a bit better that would be good.

Thanks again waffle.

Hope it goes well ds decided to play his cornet in their end of year play last year which meant jumping off the stage to do his musical turn !! Great for them all to have the opportunity to perform Smile

My colleague got back to me, with quite a few suggestions, although nothing that's been in the charts in the past couple of years, sorry! If you want something like that, you can go to Musicnotes.com, search for whatever track you want, plus "easy cornet", pick the version she likes the look of, put it into a key she likes, and print it out. Usually costs a couple of quid.

Head of Music says "The early trumpet players tend to use the Trinity grade pieces as concert pieces (Cheeky Cherry and The Guv'nor being the most popular). I know the trumpet teacher uses the Peter Lawrance books with them, which have lots of semi well known (to them!) short tunes: Easy Winners, Winners Galore (and one more with a similar title) and I think these extend up to about grade III and sometimes are used for exam board list pieces. Two of the books have separate piano parts and the other is billed as solo tunes but then weirdly there is also a piano part book to it that has accompaniments to about half of the "unaccompanied" tunes! (It's taken me a long time to suss this out, so I hope my efforts can save someone some work!). Some also come with CD backings."

You might find something from this free website:

How about Singing' in the rain? or Consider Yourself? or Off to see the Wizard? or Super Trooper?

There are probably hundreds of tunes in the Jamey Aebersold books, but you will have to trawl through them to find something suitable and of appropriate standard:
