Activity suggestions for 9 yo dd

Everyoneafter3 · 04/06/2017 15:45

Can anyone suggest any activity - physical - for my dd1? She's done all the swimming badges she can do, pretty much (ASA Gold and 1km distance - I think we get she can swim...). She's really into music but isn't the most active child so she definitel needs 'structured' activity. She's also very goal-oriented so while we could and do take her for a regular swim/run/bike ride she needs more, iyswim.

Hates the idea of dance and gymnastics. Tried the latter twice when she was younger but the clubs here don't seem to have much in the way of recreational classes - it's basic stuff then straight to squad if promising but nothing for others really. Likes the idea of acro, oddly, but the places that do it insist on at least one dance class a week: I work and I cannot get her to activities after school plus she loathed ballet. Doesn't fancy diving, water polo or synchronised swimming, all of which are available at the local pool.

Loves cycling so wondered about local tri club but it clashes with orchestra which is her favourite thing in the world.

Local trampoline club is full and they aren't taking names for the waiting list even. Ditto with the local athletics clubs. She wondered about kick boxing which made me wonder about martial arts - an idea? Is there anything I haven't thought of?

Is there a cheerleading club nearby? Its structured and incorporates acro? What about netball or an athletics club?

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 04/06/2017 16:29

Yes, a martial art is a good idea, particularly if she's goal-oriented and likes structure -- see what's on offer near you and easy to get to. DD1 is 9 and loves Judo. She also enjoys Rugby (although Rugby Union is on its summer break now until September),

If she likes the idea of acro she might like street dance?

CountryCaterpillar · 04/06/2017 16:33

Rookies? They do junior lifeguarding here I think my daughter will do.

annandale · 04/06/2017 16:37

Climbing?

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 04/06/2017 16:41

Does she not want to try out for a competitive swimming club?

Sailing if you have somewhere.

2014newme · 04/06/2017 16:42

HelenaJustina · 04/06/2017 16:44

Mine does ballet, tap and Rookie Lifeguards. She recently dropped an activity and so we're looking round for something to replace it.

Martial arts, piano, hockey, tennis, drama are all on the long list

jelliebelly · 04/06/2017 16:48

My dd(8) loves karate and rugby - both physical and goal oriented

Cagliostro · 04/06/2017 17:00

DD loves rock climbing. It really works for her as it pushes her to achieve but without competing with others, or worrying about team dynamics (she is likely autistic so struggles with that sort of thing). Same reason she enjoys trampolining, shame your one is full as that's been great for DD.

Cagliostro · 04/06/2017 17:01

My leisure centre also offers fencing lessons.

MrsPnut · 04/06/2017 17:03

My 10 year old does scouts, judo, rugby union and swims for a club.

If you get a good judo dojo they are very supportive and a rugby is a great team sport, we have kids move from football every season and comment on how different it is. We applaud either team scoring a try at our club Grin

meala · 04/06/2017 17:37

How about figure/ice skating? There are badges they can work towards on skate UK programme which they can earn for mastering certain skills. Great fun and good exercise.

meala · 04/06/2017 17:37

Also recommend rugby. Lots of girls play at DS club.

Cagliostro · 04/06/2017 17:39

I really really wish we were nearer an ice rink meala! DD loves roller blading and she has enjoyed ice skating when we went to the temporary rink the last couple of winters, I would love her to be able to do a regular class

simonthedog · 04/06/2017 17:40

My 10 year old does ice skating, swimming, lifeguards, roller derby and dance and plays guitar

BarchesterFlowers · 04/06/2017 17:46

Here it is fencing, archery, swimming, pottery and music.

Couldn't she join a swimming club?

Waddlelikeapenguin · 04/06/2017 18:04

Indoor climbing. Excelent for my goal orientated DD.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 04/06/2017 18:06

My DD is 9 and adores cricket.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 04/06/2017 18:10

Sorry, pressed too soon. She also adores climbing at the local climbing centre.

Everyoneafter3 · 04/06/2017 18:29

Some excellent suggestions - actually she's done climbing a few times and enjoyed it.

Doesn't want to do competitive swimming but might ask again! She's too young for rookie lifeguarding round here (she'd need to be 13) but that's on her future wish list. I'd not thought about fencing or netball. We've no nearby ice rinks but roller skating is a good though too.

We've got music covered - violin, orchestra, piano and choir.

Cycling club - many run the British Cycling "Go Ride" scheme. Kids sessions based on skills and activities etc (depending on the interests and strengths of the club). Often PAYG. Often leads to bike racing - girls under represented, so often a good chance of a podium place!

Find a Go Ride Club

CountryCaterpillar · 04/06/2017 19:38

There's junior rookies that starts at 8 (amd stage 5+) near me. I thought it was nationwide!

Minimusiciansmama · 05/06/2017 13:00

Is there a Junior ParkRun nearby?
