March Music Thread

Here you are - a new thread for March! I can't believe we are now up to 700+ posts each month. Thank you all.

I am Waffle, Mum to two girls. I have Goo (11), short for Kajagoogoo, which is 'short' for Kaj, which means... well, that would be telling! Her younger sister is Rara (8) - Rara is what she used to call herself when she was learning to speak. Goo plays the flute, recorder and piano. Rara plays the cello, recorder and clarinet. We have Grade 7 Flute and Grade 1 Clarinet booked for the end of this month. I think we might have Grade 3 Cello and Grade 4 Piano coming up next term. Goo is off to secondary in a few months, and I really don't know if she will ever manage to fit in her last couple of recorder exams. I'm all for saving money though.

I will try my best to read everything and follow this month. Last month's thread moved so fast!!

Wonderfull news!

Fleurdelise · 17/03/2017 21:16

Wow Kutik! Congratulations, he must have been amazing! Are you going to accept the offer? You must feel so amazing!

Kutik73 · 17/03/2017 21:38

Thank you all. We still have two auditions to do so we don't know which one to go yet. But it's huge reassurance that DS is on the right track.

Kutik73 · 17/03/2017 21:41

I'm still in sort of disbelief... I had to ask them if it meant 'yes' after they explained scholarship and all that. Smile

Greenleave · 17/03/2017 21:46

I think he did amazingly well given he started only couple of years ago, dont practise as much and only having school group lesson once a week and you dont play the instrument. He is talented Kutik, its great that he knows he could be good and has the support he needs, he will grow so much more with JD and Orchestra. That is wonderful Kutik!

Icouldbeknitting · 17/03/2017 21:55

kutik that's lovely to hear, you must be floating along at the moment. Congratulations!

DS will be coming home from band tonight with a £6k instrument that we do not own yet, there's no insurance on it and he has a residential tomorrow. Who is going to be the evil parent that says he can't take his (not his yet) new toy away with him?

Kutik73 · 17/03/2017 21:57

Thank you Green, but he is not that fabulous like you stated. He has been learning more than a couple years (4 years) and yes he's been learning at school but he does has access to individual lesson. Grin But he did well, and this offer means a lot to us. Having no grade exams we really didn't know where he was.

Fleurdelise · 17/03/2017 22:03

Icouldbe what's the instrument?

Kutik he is very talented I am sure. If you ever feel like sharing his playing I'd love to hear him as I never know what is the JD entry level. Never looked into it, I do know what it says on paper but I have no clue how it sounds if that makes sense. Smile

Fleur, your DD is totally absolutely in if she is ready for the challenge. She is an amazing pianist. I don't really have any video to share other than small clips here and there as we usually only film for reviewing purpose. I don't film him at concerts. I have a very old one filmed a year ago which I showed ealing, but it's probably out of date and it was before we bought piano so he was playing on the digital. I will try to film him next couple of days or weeks (piano or violin or both). By the way he was made to play piano during the audition as they knew he would play piano too! He is better to prepare one for the next audition just in case. Grin

Greenleave · 17/03/2017 22:32

Its lovely to hear his achievement Kutik, his early commitment to a high level of sports must have helped.

Icould: £6k hahaha, please dont say here where do you live!!!

Doubleup · 17/03/2017 22:35

Well done minikutik!

drummersmum · 17/03/2017 22:58

kutik fabulous Smile

LooseAtTheSeams · 17/03/2017 23:07

Kutik wonderful news, well done DS! Star

Fleurdelise · 17/03/2017 23:38

Thanks kutik but I don't actually believe dd to be that good, I am proud of her nevertheless. Smile

Can't wait to hear which JD will minikutik choose. What did his dad say?

Kutik73 · 18/03/2017 05:52

I don't actually believe dd to be that good

But that's how I was like. We got some nice compliments at concerts and so on, but we also knew quite a few wonderful musicians at his age, so I always thought he was not THAT good. I don't still know if he is THAT good, because the journey has just started. But at least I know he is doing really well - much better than we thought, and that he has got 'sparks' to receive such an offer. So I am learning to be more positive, and be supportive towards ds. It's quite hard for some who has a tendency to be more critical towards their own child (but I am not saying you are like that, Fleur, I can see you are very much a down-to-earth, positive mum). Having said that, I know there is no tick box and such, so this kind of achievement is not for what everybody want or care. You are very right to be so proud of your dd no matter what she achieves, and I am also the same. It was just a lovely surprise which would be enough to motivate and encourage my ds to keep going for a while. Smile

Kutik73 · 18/03/2017 06:08

Thank you all for lots of 'well done'.

Green, interesting you pointed out his commitment to sports somehow contributed to his music journey. I have quite a few people who mentioned it in the past. I think his excellent motor skills may have done some goodness then. But, he is a very unbalanced child I must say. He was always very advanced physically, however, he was and still is very very clumsy. There is no day when he comes back from school without new bruises. He can get hurt even when he is not doing anything active! I hear him shouting 'ouch!' through a day... I joked him that we must insure his fingers. Grin

ealingwestmum · 18/03/2017 06:15

StarI Star Starminikutik!!

Pradaqueen · 18/03/2017 06:43

Well done mini Kutik! 👏👏👏👏👏👏

Green - I agree with everyone else. Ditch the teacher, she might cause a decline in love of learning with minigreen and the violin. Strict is ok, raising your voice says more about the teacher's state of mind than the child's ability to pick up what is being said...

stringchild · 18/03/2017 06:46

Kutik -wow! so please for your DS - that is amazing - well done :) esp exceptional on a violin which is def the most oversubscribed instrument with piano for JD auditions! a scholarship is also a v lovely thing indeed! How are you going to choose between the three? are you going to change teachers?

Kutik that is fantastic news well done to your ds ( and good luck with the upcoming auditions- not that he sounds like he will need it!!)
Waffle good luck with the exams in the coming weeks ( I had both doing exams in the same sitting last spring they were oblivious but my nerves were torn to shreds by the end of march !!)
Icould I feel your pain with busy schedules hectic seems to have become my new normal I can't wait for easterSmile and I would totally be that mum who said no to taking away a new uninsured instrument Grin last year ds was lent a very expensive cornet for a while and his teacher didn't really get why I wouldn't let my 11 year old take it away on a residential course (he doesn't have children !!)

Icouldbeknitting · 18/03/2017 09:05

Trumpetboysmum I didn't have to be the evil parent because DH had already done that on the way home. I pointed out that he could take a photo with him to show the lovely lady from the music partnership who will technically be buying it (we will pay them the total net of VAT). He was fine with it although he doesn't realise that it will probably be three weeks before it's actually his.

As I said to my husband, banding is a small world and if we did a runner with the instrument then DS would never play again which sort of defeats the point of having the instrument. DH is being very cagey about the cost, I have no idea why as I'll find out when the invoice comes. I have spotted the gold plating on the tuning slides and the fancy pants engraving. I dare say it will be cheaper than having a horse or a harp.

Kutik73 · 18/03/2017 09:08

string, thanks for your 'well done'. I would like to keep his current teacher at least until the end of his primary school - ds is enjoying so much as a school violinist and also we like the teacher and we will miss his grumpiness! But really I don't know what will happen. I know RAM will let younger children keep the current teacher if they wish though.

string, actually I like to hear your thoughts about your dd's current jd. I know it will vary people to people and instruments to instruments. But if you don't mind I would like to know what really made you consider changing your dd's jd.... Would you please PM me if you think you can share that with me. If you rather like to keep it to yourself, I totally understand so don't worry.

se22mother · 18/03/2017 10:03

Congratulations miniKutik
