Advice on DIY piano lessons

DS1 (7) has shown an interest in learning the piano, but as I used to play I'm planning on starting him off at home myself. I wasn't a brilliant player (peaked at grade 5) but know enough, I think, to help a complete beginner.

We're currently working through John Thompson's piano course book 1 and I've said we'll sort out lessons if he still likes it (and practices most days) after we've finished the second book.

Does this sound like a reasonable plan, or could I be teaching him bad habits?

It seems to be going well so far. I'm making sure he is using the correct fingers for each note as marked in the book, and am encouraging him to sit up straight, with wrists up and shoulders down. Other than that, I'm just sticking getting the rights notes in the right order and the right timing!

If there are any piano teachers out there, I'd be grateful for any helpful tips! I will pay a teacher at some point, honest.....

Thank you!

Is it an acoustic piano you have, or digital?

Yes: John Thompson is a good place to start, I always think, though more 'formal' pianists might not agree.

I'll try and come back sometime with more ideas to tutor books, music etc.

An electronic instrument gives more scope I always think, as you can record or multi-track via MIDI and interface with computers. Meanwhile, have a look at this site for ideas:

Oooh - a reply! Thank you!

It's a Roland digital piano - not top of the range by any stretch but not bottom either. It's enough for us I think. It can do all sorts of fancy things according to the instructions. The kids spent a couple of years only being interested in the exotic sounds it can make, so I was delighted when the eldest actually showed an interest in learning to play properly!

Flossie if you join the December music thread I am sure you will get a few answers. I am not a music teacher so I can't help.

I'll come back in a few days, meanwhile 'Search' on my name and keyboard, piano, music and similar key-words for more information.
