Monologue suggestions - must be from a published play

My DD needs to find a 2 - 3 minute monologue from a published play for an audition at school (internal scholarship 13+). She has found some good ones but they are not from published plays. Does anyone have any suggestions? She prefers comedy to serious drama, but will of course need to be able to do both so all suggestions gratefully received! Thanks.

Shirley Valentine - Hello Wall

Various John Godber ones - Teechers (need a lot of 'tude to carry that off), Bouncers.

Alan Bennett Talking Heads.

How about something from The Crucible? Or My Mother Said I Never Should? It's a long time since I last read or saw them, but IIRC there are some stonking speeches for teenage girls.

TC is serious, of course, but there is lighter stuff, if not actual comedy, in MMSINS.

Thanks so much for the suggestions, will look at them all.

Lady Macbeth?

Actually Juliet's soliloquy from act 4 is a terrific piece for a teenage girl. Not comedy though, obv.

Im a huge fan of the talking heads monologues but it depends how well she can channel her inner old lady.If she can the bit from a cream cracker under the sofa about the stillborn baby " she said he wasn't fit to be called anything and did we keep any shoeboxes" is utterly heart breaking

Helenluvsrob · 01/12/2016 10:05

Loads of great shakespearian comedy and gender reversal very " in" at the moment so Malvolio would work

Maudlinmaud · 01/12/2016 10:11

Audition speeches for 6 to 16 year olds by Jean Marlow. It has lots and they are all published. For that age I would suggest Invisible Friends by Alan Ayckbourn or The voyage of the dawn treader CS Lewis and has been adapted.
Is there a time limit?

Maudlinmaud · 01/12/2016 10:11

Oh there is sorry.

I see at least two people are ahead of me with the Talking Heads suggestion, which was my first thought. A lady of letters ('no cloth on') might be easier than the cream cracker one.

Can she do something from musical theatre, like Chicago, The Producers or A Chorus Line? They all have speaking parts in addition to the songs.

My dd did the vicar's wife Alan Bennett one.

Rosalind's Epilogue from "As you like it"

Lots of background information available in the web, Helen Mirren on You Tube, Enjoy.

It still comes to my lips, forty cough cough years after i did it for Lamda's gold medal exams. Lovely.

The Sphinx from Greek- can't remember too much of it but a girl did it for our theatre studies as level and it was brilliant. I did Shirley Valentine (in a terrible scouse accent!)

merlottime · 01/12/2016 15:59

Wow, these suggestions are great. Thank you all so much! We are novices at this as you can probably tell!

On reflection , probably not the Alan Bennett- although it is very funny. Dd was older when she did it! Have a look on Amazon for books of monologues categorized for age and gender-ds has one for young men that's really good.

EvilTwins · 06/12/2016 23:16

She needs something age appropriate! This is an excellent starting point. National Theatre Connections is an annual festival of new plays for young performers. After Juliet is worth checking out (character is Rosaline)
