Trinity exercises explained?

Hello, switching from Abrsm to Trinity and trying to understand the added exercises in the piano book... Are they supposed to learn them/play them like if they were pieces?

Yes but they don't play them all in the exam. You chose to practise either the a or b exercise (so three pieces), in the exam the candidate chooses one of the three to play and the examiner chooses one of the others.

I should also say I feel your pain at switching to the unknown, our recent switch from Trinity to LCM meant looking at everything from scratch. He had to turn up on the day with photo id and their attitude to photocopies was different enough to give me nightmares.

They're mini pieces composed to demonstrate certain skills. So, for example, you'll get "tone, balance and voicing" where you'd need to bring out the melody line over the accompaniment, have appropriate tonal qualities, and if playing higher with large chords make sure that the notes that sound more prominent are the important ones.

They don't need to be played from memory, unlike scales.
