Any of you lovely lot know about trumpet music?

My friend's DD (aged 9) plays the trumpet and the cornet and is turning out to be very talented. I'd like to get her a CD / couple of CDs of trumpet/cornet music for Christmas to inspire her but have no idea where to start. I'm thinking classical rather than jazz I suppose but am open to suggestions.

Anyone got any ideas? Thank you!

what level? do you know what pieces she is playing in her lessons?

How about some top notch brass band music? Something by Black Dyke band or Paul Lovett cooper? There are bound to be some good solos in any selection, plus a good mix of classical, popular and brass classics.

I think she has just taken Grade 3. Not a clue what she's playing in her lessons I'm afraid but she plays in an orchestra and a youth band so a mix of classical and more favourite brass band pieces.

I second the Alison Balsom suggestion, DS went to one of her concerts at about that age and really enjoyed it

My son (grade 7 horn) thought the worst present ever was horn music from a relative who was only trying to be kind. Thankfully he kept his views to himself!

What about a CD where she can play the trumpet part and the accompaniment of orchestra is on the CD?

I suspect she might like money more or an Amazon voucher hwoever keen she is on the trumpet. I have 2 trumpeters at home ( 2 x grade 8) and even they would not want trumpet music as it's free on youtube and spotify anyway.

Take your point Deo but they are not really a YouTube/Spotify household. Can you get those accompaniment CDs on Amazon or should I look for a specialist shop? I will check this idea with her mum before purchasing!!

"Music Minus One" (which is probably an American company) produces a wide range of music for every instrument, with orchestral backing on CD, minus the 'solo' instrument which the student plays from the supplied score. But you need to know her performance level, as a wide range of ability is available, often fairly advanced, I would guess.

Yes, Alison Balsom is THE trumpet virtuoso, and was a finalist in BBC Young Musician programme in 1998, though she didn't win.

My dd2 is 9 and did grade 3 trumpet last term...so same age and standard as your friend's dd. At the moment likes tenThing - a female Norwegian brass group. I could ask dh later about books to play along to. I don't know any as dd2 plays along with dh, not a CD! He is a trumpet player/teacher.

Of course I could promote dh's books/CDs, but that would not be right

Get tickets to go and see Mnozil (sp?) Brass. Very funny, brass group and amazing players. Schilke - has your dh been to see them?
Also try a brass quintet called Mardi Brass. I believe they have a (few?) CD's.

1805 - yes we all went to see Mnozil Brass in October last year. Absolutely brilliant. Loved every bit of it. Oddly enough the trumpet playing child moaned about having to go and then afterwards wanted to watch them again. I think all 4 dc enjoyed it and that is a rare moment!

I would imagine an accessible role model for a young brass player.

plenty of Mnozil Brass clips on YouTube. They are back in the uk on Feb 11,12,13th. I would definitely get her tickets to see them.

I have a trumpeter in the family. She loves playing by herself, with the band and in the orchestra. She is not much for going to concerts or listening to others passively, so she would agree with Deo. At your friend's DD's age and level I would be wary of giving her more music to play along with if she already has lesson music and orchestral and band music to master.

If she already has a trumpet and a cornet to play then I would suggest asking her parents about accessories. There seems to be an endless variety of mutes to experiment with.

I had a chat with my friend yesterday and apparently her DD is now playing at Grade 5 standard. She has asked Father Christmas for some Alison Balsom CDs for Christmas so I'm pleased I was at least along the right lines. I agree with you howabout that the music to play along with potentially sounds like hard work rather than a pleasurable gift. But my friend was very interested to hear the recommendations so I am going to pass all the links on to her (and potentially convert her to MN along the way ).

I think I am going to go for a TenTHing CD so that I don't cross over with Father Christmas!
