How do you know when something has run its course?

Dd is 14 and has always done lots of extracurricular stuff. Started with dance, then football and now cricket. Plus she plays volleyball and hockey at school.

Her out of school football has not been going well - the team are struggling for numbers and she hasn't really got any better, training isn't great. Her cricket has really taken off and she plays at county level.

She played football for school tonight, admittedly 2 years above her age, and she was terrible, didn't play well and her attitude both during and after was dreadful. Tonight she says she's not playing any more.

Part of me feels really sad, as football has been a huge part of her identity for 6 years. Another worry is her weight, as she is big despite all her sport, and I worry that she will just lounge at home without it.

I think I may be over thinking it, and I know things come to a natural end, but what do they do instead ? Will she just play more cricket, or will she be dead lazy?! How much do I push her to persevere?

Sorry to moan Blush

If she is 14, I don't think she will thank you much if you' push'!

Nothing lasts for ever - and there are plenty of other things she can do, if she wants to: swimming, athletics, gymnastics, cross-country running.

She doesn't sound like she will ever be 'dead lazy'!

No, don't push her to carry on, the fun has probably gone out of it. Just say OK never mind, and that you understand and will be happy to support her decision whatever she decides to do.

There comes a point where you have to make choices. We are facing that this year (DD also 14 just doesn't have the time to do everything she would like to).

I suppose the concern is that cricket being seasonal, she'll have no activities for part of the year? If she needs to keep fit because she is playing cricket at a high level, perhaps she would enjoy another, purely recreational sport?

How about Basketball and Tennis ?

There is that Mistigri, that she needs to keep fit. Cricket actually only stops for about 2 months and then winter training starts again! I think she has always introduced herself as the girl who plays cricket and football and is strong and confident, and now part of that is drifting away. And she loves the girls she plays with.
Don't think I could face her replacing it with something else mom17!! She ends up playing lots of things for school because she has a good eye for the ball - we've already turned down extra volleyball!
She has calmed down since yesterday (there was an element of PMT although that doesn't excuse her attitude) and I think we will just let it run its course, and then see if she wants to play somewhere else, or for fun,or not at all
