DD plays the trombone, what could she change to?

DD2 started playing the trombone about 4 years ago and has struggled a bit. She's Y8 now, and not small but has ASD and hypermobility and low muscle tone, and finds it so heavy. She supposed to do her G3 this year but to add insult to injury has just had braces put on and everything has gone to pieces.
I haven't said anything to her , but I'm wondering if we could try her on something else. She already plays the piano, just sat G4, so is pretty musical. Has anyone got any ideas/suggestions?

Could she try a pbone for lightness maybe, of she wanted to carry on with trombone? You can do early grades on them.

DS1 went from trumpet to trombone. but the other way is harder I think, especially with braces.

For a complete change, if she didn't want a lighter woodwind, would sax with a shoulder harness be any good?

Sax might be easier with braces. And she could still join a ska band! Grin

She'll be pushed towards alto, which is lighter but ubiquitous. She might manage a tenor with a view to progressing to baritone later (super beefy and cool).

There was an article about a shortage of bassoon players a while back, if she fancies something quirky. Though a teacher might be hard to come by.

I'd go with a pbone. I assume with her difficulties as you've outlined, anything that took her back to the start with a new instrument would knock her confidence ?

A cornet would not be too challenging a swap though and ive known brass players just carry on through braces including my " little" friend with a learning disability who had headgear etc too. He is my hero- the first in his special school to get into a mainstream county music service ensemble.
