Football/rugby boots confused

DS starts secondary school in Sept and football boots are on the kit list. A friend says they also do rugby at the school.

Having looked at various threads here snd elsewhere I'm a bit confused. I understand about interchangeable studs and rugby having to have metal rugby ones as plastic football ones get sharp edges. But then I read that for general school use moulded or blades are ok for both sports. Don't these suffer with burrs too? I'd prefer these as I don't want to be switching studs all the time (DS has dyspraxia and would be unlikely to be able to do it himself).

We have to get rugby boots with studs.

Ds has blades for football out of school & I can't see them getting sharp, it's smooth plastic but they are really only meant for hard ground or 3G(artificial grass) not soft muddy rugby pitches

So I guess it depends what sort of field they play on. Footie boots were fine for tag rugby in junior school.

Boots with blades are not acceptable at our DSs school for rugby.

They can have football boots but must put in proper screw in rugby studs for rugby. Some football boots have sort of square plastic studs along with screw in studs that are acceptable as long as they are not blades.

Please note some football boots have metal screw in studs but they are very narrow and are not suitable for rugby. Rugby studs are generally fatter.

Also (the woman in sports direct told me this) rugby boots are harder across the top so protect the toe area more wheras football boots are softer as some players like to be able to feel the ball. ) I had been prepared to buy expensive SG football boots but ended up with much cheaper Patrick rugby boots.

Oh and be prepared for your sanity to begin slipping away as your DS ums and ahs about precisely which boot he wants.

Taking DS1 age 15 and DS2 age 13 to choose boots this morning proved to be somewhat trying to say the least!

Rugby boots start at £6.99 on Sports Direct… Personally, i would just get him some of those. I didn't let DS have any choice about the brand but luckily he seems to have no opinion on that yet!

My sanity is already slipping having done school shoes already this week. Luckily DS isn't at all into brands yet. However he is going to have to have elastic lace replacements so the softer the boot the better in that respect. Thanks for all the comments, I think I'd better scrutinise the school website for more details. DS could really do with some astro boots for hockey at the weekends too .

Hope I'm not too late to help. The rule is clear that rugby studs must be kite marked (weird triangle symbol, it's an industry standard safety quality). That means all metal rugby studs. This should be checked before each match but the ref. Ref's can and occasionally do stop someone playing for having wrong (or missing) studs. This is a safety issue (you get stamped on fat more often in rugby).
How enforced this is is less clear; it depends on the ref each match (nor useful I know), the age and level (how old is ds, will be be in the A team for rugby), whether he's in the forwards (more stamping, more important to have proper studs) or backs and proper studs, even football studs, will be more accepted than blades which a lot of refs particularly dislike (for good reason). Personally I wouldn't get rugby boots unless I wad fairly sure he'd be playing regularly in matches (I.e make the a team for his year) but would if/when this is clear especially if he's in the forwards.

Ds is very very unlikely to be in even the Z team for rugby so we've goneceith the cheapest option. The teacher at school hasn't yet noticed the lack of kite mark. If he does I'll play dumb.
