Is it worth aiming at? And is it realistic to get there (I am familiar with entry requirements). Perhaps someone knows what it is like in there from personal or friend's experience?
The reason I am thinking about it is that (presumably) they provide first class teaching in there, and I like the idea that all music is done in one place in one day rather than having endless lessons during the week after school and no time left for anything else.
Any information will be highly aprecciated Flowers

Anyone?

It's convenient to do all the lessons in one day at one place, yes. Most of the teaching at our equivalent institution was excellent, some was poor. You can't afford to assume that someone else knows best about your child and their learning needs.

Both RCM and RAM run open day sometimes in the spring term. It worth to attend to make the decision. Some of the teachers there are world level tutor, some are, just like Noteventhebestdrummer said, poor.

How far would you need to travel?

Worriedandlost · 22/09/2015 10:07

Sorry for abandoning my own topic :)
Moominmammacat, about one hour, direct train.
However, I decided not to do it at this stage. Dd is very musical, but not mature yet, so I will leave till junior stage. There is no rush after all and she is progressing fast with her current teachers.
Thank you all Flowers

My son didn't enjoy the Junior Academy very much, but he is very serious and felt the level was not great, chamber music was not good (only 45' and no one well prepared, in his opinion). In general, he felt there wasn't enough of an excited buzz. It was a bit too school-like, not exciting and bubbling with enthusiasm.

Worriedandlost · 22/09/2015 11:35

What city you are talking about claraschu? I read about bad experience in some of the Northern JA, but I am looking at London ones...

Sorry, the Royal Academy in London. I am just passing on my son's opinion though. He was 14-16 at the time, and ended up at the Menuhin School, so maybe he was just a bit too intense about it all. I don't mean to badmouth the Academy, as I know that lots of people enjoy it-

Worriedandlost · 22/09/2015 13:43

claraschu I can see where your son is coming from now! If he ended up at Menuhin school he obviously was very good and found hard to find smth suitable to his level!
May I ask you if he became/aims at becoming a professional musician?

Music is his obsession and all he wants to do. He is very single minded, which is why I am saying to take his opinions with a large dollop of salt. I just mentioned what he thought so you would get a range of responses. The Junior Academy is quite a commitment, and takes up most of the day, so it is a good idea to look at it carefully.

How old is your daughter and what is her instrument?

Worriedandlost · 22/09/2015 19:24

claraschu thank you! Her main instrument is violin and she is at primary school but it is few years to junior academy and of course smth may change till then but at the moment I look at it as a continuation of her musical education.
I am aware it is a commitment but she already has two lessons+ orchestra/week, so used to it.
Good to know your son's opinion, he knows it from within, he is dedicated and serious about it-big thank you for sharing it!
What is his instrument? (my first thought was violin because of Menuhin school :)))

He is a cellist; sorry I can't be more helpful, but it sounds like you have a good situation for your daughter right now. Maybe going to have a look around the academy is a good idea, probably interesting even if it's not exactly what you want at the moment.

Good luck-

Worriedandlost · 22/09/2015 23:55

Thank you! Flowers
(cello is close enough! :))
