Feeling a bit isolated

I'm a working single Mum of a nearly 11year old son, due to my circumstances I'm starting to feel a bit isolated, my friends children are older or much younger, so I find that activities/days out don't suit all of our families. My son started the local primary school in primary 3, the children and parents friendships were already established and I didn't find them very welcoming of us. Can anyone make suggestions of activities for my son and I to do together that could help to build our friendships please? I'm lucky enough to have friends, but none with children of a suitable age to give my son company. Many thanks.

My DSis (single mum) did karate with her boys.

Scouts. They are always looking for parent helpers and they do tend to be friendly types.

Ditto Scouts.

Be prepared to try a number of activities... You might hit in one which works straight away, but you might not. My dc have eventually settled on 2 activities they really like. So many variables... Is the leader engaging? Are the other parents interesting? Do the dc get on? Do the dc like the activity?

Conservation volunteers? DP and my (younger) kids do that together and it works nicely as adults and kids with a shared project. Most areas have some kind of wildlife-ish conservation project going on.
