Junior Conservatoire of Scotland

Went to the open day at the Junior Conservatoire of Scotland last weekend. Daughter (age 14, S3) is keen to audition, but wondering about the time committment (two hours travelling each way) and the effect on the musical things she already does.

She's wondering about music at uni (obviously many years away) - would this be helpful/necessary?

Helpful, yes. Necessary to do music at university? No. I studied music academically and come from a place where none of that was available without getting on a plane. It may help enormously if she has ambitions to go to conservatoire (RSCM, RCM, Royal Northern, Academy etc.) however. And, of course, could be absolutely fantastic or far too tiring depending on child and family.

Dd (12) announced last night (with application for audition closing today) that she'd like to audition. No chance to discuss with her teacher so have shelled out the £35 for the audition application, half hoping she doesn't get in as a bit at the nearly £2k a year fees. Still, if she does get in then we'll deal with it cut back more & never go on holiday. Still not entirely sure what's even involved as too late for the open day.

For us the distance was the major reason she's not applied. It looked an amazing opportunity for both lessons and performance opportunities. If we lived in Glasgow/Strathclyde, decision might have gone the other way.

We're close enough for the travelling not to be a huge issue . DS 1 wants to jump on the bandwagon too, but is only 10 and not keen on practising so I think that'll be a flat no, not until you can practice without being nagged! DD off to see if she can track down her music teacher at school today & see what they think.

Thanks little. Her music teacher was supportive but I get the feeling she feels it's a little ambitious. Still, prep for the audition will give dd a good goal to focus on.
