Dd has just got the date for her first paint exam . It was booked months ago but I have just been give the date and time and she will need to miss a morning of school to attend .

Is this normal ? Will she always have to miss school to take the exams . She's only 9 now so not a massive deal but could be when she gets to high school .

Oh, I see - as Dragonette says, you don't need a code.
When a teacher marks a register, they put a / if the dc is there an 0 if not, or one of the other letters if they know why not - like sickness or there's one specifically for a child who is being educated elsewhere - so, in the event of a fire they know they are not in the building, but for attendance figures, they are not away either.

Olaflikes,

You don't get a code. When a child is absent, the school marks a particular thing in the register which corresponds to the absent mark in the register. So if a child misses registration, we put a 0. If the child was late, we put a little L in the middle of the 0; if on authorised holidays, a little H; if on authorised absence, I assume it's an A or something. I can't remember, it's ages since I've had to put it in.

Very normal. 11yo Dd has missed time for violin and cello exams, auditions and even a daytime concert!

thanks - I will check that with the school then. I am sure it went down just as authorised absence last time but then she was missing time for SALT sessions too so perhaps I miscounted how many sessions were that. I did make it clear in my letter it was in an OFSTED approved venue and was an ISTD exam so is approved and so on. Ah well if it is authorised or educated offsite it doesn't make much difference to DD anyway, only to the school's stats. thanks for clarifying.
