Can anyone recommend any treble recorder music for Christmas? Grade 4-7.

Solo / how many parts?

Classical or light? Just treble?

Definition of Christmassy?

Most singing books will provide you with Christmas carols that you can play on a treble if that's what you mean. I'm sure there are rudolf type jolly arrangements out there ...

Alan Davis has an amazing arrangement of the 12 days of Xmas but that's a large group piece.

Solo as others are not up to that standard, pref. Classical not jolly. We have tons of piano music but would prefer something new as they have all been played a lot.

The only thing I have come up with so far is Walking in the Air.

Already have a Paul Clark arrangement of 12 days from a group a couple of years ago.

Problem seems to be playing solo rather than in a group.

I use Saunders for everything recorders so will ask there if they know of anything.

We've never , I must say had any specially Christmassy solos odd really! The oxford book of carols and a good accompanist might provide you with some lovely and not well known carols.

I'd look at the Saunders Recorders website, which has a catalogue ordered by genre, including Christmas, but also by composer, type of group, etc. I order from them occasionally - very prompt and helpful service. I emailed the proprietor with all sorts of questions about an edition - range of notes, difficulty etc, and received a very detailed reply. Why not ask him what you've just asked us?

I will ask John, just wondered if anyone here had any recommendations. I know that he is running down his music side of things this year so his stock is less than it used to be and there isn't anything that really grabs me on his Christmas list (that we don't already have).

Check out recorder music by mail?

There are various arrangements of in dulce jubilo, certainly, but you need more than one player for that if you're going the full Mike Batt. Grin I've been doing it at Xmas day mass for years with one of the fiddlers, but this year they've asked if I can do it with the girls instead (the fiddler might still join in though). Undecided if we will or not. Not least because while I'm fine with ceding the soppo part to one of the girls and playing bass, they can't choose between them.

Thanks Rabbit, that is really helpful, I haven't seen that shop before at all.

I am fairly new to recorders - well came back about 18 months ago (did grade 8 previously) when I decided that I couldn't justify buying a new oboe. I was lucky enough to find John Everingham straight away and have bought my recorders from him.

We have a very small group of players of very varying abilities but I often find myself lost for music choice (and I get to choose the music most of the time).

I presume you've tried the Early Music Shop? Other than that, your best bet, I think, is to rearrange maybe a Christmas cantata or oratorio-or go for something non-christmassy?

I have never actually shopped at EMS! Unless I know the piece I want I don't find their webpage descriptive enough whereas I can have a lovely chat with the man I usually buy from.
