Hi Wise Mumsnetters!

I have seen several contemporary dance class's being advertised recently - but they all seem to say minimum Grade 3 ballet or age 11. I am just wondering whether this is standard?

Thank you!

Yes. Ballet is the basis of many other techniques and the style is quite mature.

Yes. Dd started contemporary when she was 11 & in grade 3. There was a 9 year old in the class but she was quite an advanced dancer.

Thank you! A few more years for us then - which feels right anyway!

Modern dance starts much younger - not sure if you have considered it?

chauffeurmummy · 16/12/2013 10:23

Thanks - yes she does ballet, Modern Theatre and tap. I wasn't really looking for Contemporary classes for her - I've just seen in advertised a few times recently and I was curious.

Although I think she'll love it when she is big enough!!

How old is she? I'd consider a stretch class if anything as it wasn't on offer to dd & we feel it disadvantaged her.

She's 7. What's a stretch class??

Stretch & flexibility excercises. Helps with core too.

My dd 9 is doing a kids contemporary class and absolutely loves it. Everyone else in her class does ballet but at various grades and ages.

The thing she found difficult is dancing with emotion as she really doesn't have an awful lot of emotion at age 9 and everything is fun ... but she really enjoys the technical aspects of something different to her usual classes.

If I saw an advert I would probably phone up for a chat or drop them an email and take it from there as sometimes the classes just want a ballet basis and may be flexible depending on others in the class and how likely the student would be to fit in :) as they say, if you don't ask you don't get
