So our local/nearest library is closed on Wednesday afternoon/evenings. Our plush new library another 7 mins walk away is open till 10pm every day but because it's in another borough my son 12 years old was refused the right to use the facilities of a PUBLIC library. Is that right?!? Are libraries for the borough residents only? I would understand if he wanted to take home a book but he just want to use one of their computers. There were 5 computers that he could see available but he was told he couldn't use one as he was not a resident of that borough.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing

Seriously???

We're on the Hackney / Islington border and have library memberships in both boroughs. I used to have one in Westminster too. The deal with them all was that you had to have a library card for that borough to use the computers but I was never told you had to be resident! Is it at all possible that the librarian explained it badly and meant he needed a library card for the borough?

I went to school in a different LA (city council for school, county council at home) and I remember having to have something from the school to get a library card for the big library near school. This was a very long time ago though.

You need to live or work in the borough to borrow items from our library service. I think you need a card to access the computers, so I guess that rule applies to IT use too.

Libraries are funded by local authorities though. The rule for ours used to be that you had to live work or attend an educational institution in that authority's area to get a card.

Speak to your local councillor and point ask this out to them and ask if your library's hours can be extended or if an agreement can be made between the areas to share libraries. Its unlikely if your borough is underfunding libraries though Sad

I live on a county border so I'm a member of our own county, the next county so I can use the library in town and also the city in which I work. Never had a problem.
