Dunno, but perhaps someone who needed voice training for speaking (eg a teacher) might go to a vocal coach?

Picturesinthefirelight · 12/10/2013 21:49

Well they are sort of the same thing but a vocal coach tends to deal with more technical issues with advanced singers or professi

Picturesinthefirelight · 12/10/2013 21:51

Professionals eg coaching a particular sing for an upcoming gig or show

Singing teachers tend to be teachers of younger or recreational students.

Some vocal coaches can also deal with speech, dh fir example has worked with actors.

Also the professional colleges will have different types of voice coaches for different things so a student may have a regular lesson with there teacher then they may have someone like my dh who is a technical specialist and also someone else who is more of a musical director for repertoire & style.

Pictures Thank you.

I don't know why I don't pm you all the time you always help so much. Thanks
Have just heard the terms used alot recently whilst out and about with dd and was curious more than anything else.
So really coaches come into it when the singer is more mature and experienced.

Sorry, one more question. Stupid I know.
Who teaches them the refines of stage prescence, I don't mean if you haven't got it it can be taught, but how to refine or expand on what they have.
I'm talking arms, head positioning all the stuff that looks natural rather than taught and maybe a bit awkward?

Teacher, coach, or student themselves.
TIA. x

Bit of both, but dh often works alongside a drama coach. Acting through song is often taught in drama sessions.

Dd has been picked to sing at an event next week & the drama coach will go through her song with her apparently.

Ah, good for your dd, hope it goes well for her.
I think its great when parents have a particular skill to help their dc, they can improve far faster than waiting for their teacher once a week.
Although, I know it can be bad at times too, my dh is a pefectionist with dds instrument that he teaches.
She is thinking of music schools and nobody could teach it as well as her Dad.
He totally respects her singing teacher though. Smile

Dh tries not to get too involved with her singing - he helped her prepare for her audition & does little bits of troubleshooting with her but she has just started having lessons at school with a singing teacher & they do weekly vocal technique class in a group.

Picturesinthefirelight · 12/10/2013 22:30

What does your dh teach?

Is it your dd who auditioned for Halle youth chorus or am I thinking of someone else?

Hey potato, prints, the reason you don't just pm pictures is so us lurkers can read and learn from your conversation too!

Yes my dd is in one of the Halle choirs, I say one as there are several and it makes her less identifiable.
Was chuffed to bits when she got in and had prepared her for the rejection letter.

My dh teaches sax, clarinet and flute but is a player really not a teacher. He also does masterclasses at conservatoires and works as a consultant to a few LA's as in they bring him in for something special.
Its quite specific really though, so not a common type of thing to want really. He mostly plays in bands and as a freelance musician.

I post about help/advice so much that wouldn't want to bore other readers. Happy for lurkers to learn? what, I don't know Grin

I know two girls (sisters)in the Halle choirs. One has just moved up from the training choir into the main youth one. Well done to your dd.

Thanks Pictures.

She is a bit of a raw talent and really not brilliant technically, although she is working at sight singing atm. Not sure how she will get on when she comes up against the technical ones, but theres time yet and she is very enthusiastic.
