advice on lessons in music service being cancelled without makeup

I learnt yesterday from DD that her teacher will be on holiday for the next a couple of weeks, therefore the lessons will be cancelled and there is no makeup one offered. The teacher works for music service and is wonderful. DD loves her. But I feel short changed.
We pay music service fixed fee and the teacher comes to school to teach DD during lunch time. Music service won't offer makeup sessions if school is closed for that day or children are away for school trips. Fair enough. But now the teacher is on holiday during term time? Frankly now with all the cancellation, music service works out much more expensive than private lessons. The only benefit I feel that I got is that I don't need to drive DD to private teacher.
I am not sure what I should be doing. Making a complain? DD loves her teacher and doesn't want to change to another one.
Your suggestion will be appreciated.

As far as I know, instrumental music services vary from region to region. Ours specifies a particular number of lessons over the school year. This means that DS occasionally gets two lessons in one week but doesn't have another for a fortnight.

What are the terms and conditions ? We've always had make up classes in those circumstances but we pay for a fixed number of lessons.

Are you sure what you paid for? We usually pay for 10 sessions a term and typically a few days are planned to be missed. A holiday sounds like it would have been planned for in the fee schedule. For me, it's a lot cheaper than private lessons would be.

DD's teacher has been off sick for a month & DD has an exam in 3.5 weeks! Luckily they rustled up some supply teaching, but we'll be owed a refund for some of the missed sessions (because she's in y6, normally for missed sessions they just credit you on the next term's invoice). Do go into the office and ask if you'll be due any refunds for missed sessions.

Our Music Service offers a minimum of 30 lessons over the year. So we pay for 10 each term, but often receive say 9 lessons one term, 11 the next, and maybe another 11 in the final term, which means we get one free!! Sometimes the teacher teaches 2 in one week, or a double lesson, but if it doesn't add up to 30 by July, we get a credit, or refund.
If I was you, I'd add up what you've paid for and received, and ask for a refund if you're short. They must have an admin office you can contact???

I would definitely raise this. When ds2 was in yr7 and yr8 his singing lessons were cancelled/rearranged very regularly. By the end of the year he was WAY UNDER the 30 lessons he should have had. I didn't make a fuss, as his teacher was superb and he also sang in three choirs, for which there was no charge. But in hindsight I wish I had queried it at the start.

Thank you for all your replies. Yes the terms and conditions are minimum 30. With the next two weeks being cancelled, that is about right, i.e. 30. There were a few Friday training days or external trips, therefore, lessons couldn't take place in the school. This will make each 20-minute lesson cost close to £14. On the other hand, a private piano 45-minute lesson costs £20. Thank you Petruska, I will ask the admin whether there is possibility of getting a credit. I really don't want to upset the teacher since DD loves her very much and wants to stay with her forever.

Does that £14 include the violin hire?

Earlybirdie · 30/06/2013 02:59

No, doesn't include instrument hire.

The office should have registers showing how many lessons have been offered to your child. These are the ones you will be charged for.

xylem8 · 09/07/2013 17:59

In our county you are offered a minimum of I think 30 lessons a year, usually they deliver nearer to 35, but the contract stipulates 30.

LilyBolero · 10/07/2013 09:46

If you've had the 30 lessons, then I think you aren't missing any iyswim - the teachers will only be paid for the 30 lessons.
