Violin for age 3

Hi, just wondering about the size of violin for a 3 year old. Is it worth buying a 1/16 or would we get away with buying a slightly bigger one such as 1/10 or even 1/8? Our LO has been asking for a small violin but won't be having violin lessons yet, we have a violinist in the family which we hope would be ok for the time being.

I think you need him to be measured. It has to be a right size. You could rent first,I think it is about 4 pounds a month. My boy is also 3 and I got his violin from chamberlainmusic.com, they sell primavera for only 62 quid, but it is out of stock till march, so they offered me a good deal on stentor. There is a guide on the net how to measure the child for the violin. Sorry but can't link from my phone.

PS my three year old was between 1/32 and 1/16, so we opted for 1/16. I read about a petit 5 year old who is still on 1/16 violin.

1/16 size I expect, will last 12 - 18 months ish

If he can hold the violin under his chin and stretch his arm out and fold his fingers around the scroll it is the right size. Best to get it fitted at a proper music shop. Stentor are fine for beginner violins.

I think you can get a new 1/16 Stentor for around £70 on the net. You can get them even cheaper second hand.

If you have a local music shop best to go there. Ours was great when DD1 was growing as they would do part exchange and quite often had secondhand instruments for sale too, so upgrading to the next size didn't get too expensive.
