Has anyone watched their child play a really emotional scene/song

Im going to watch dd in a show tonight. She dies at the end of act 1. The audience (and even some of the other cast members) have been in floods of tears all week

I always said I don't know how the parents of the kids who play billy Elliott cope with the letter from the dead mother scene. I'm going to be in bits arnt I. Dd is 10 and plays a little girl about 8 or 9.

I have a drama/music mad ds- I tend to start crying when the curtain goes up and not stop til it finishes! No help- sorry.

What I do is make sure that I'm not so close to the front that he can see me really easily so I don't put him off, take loads of tissues, and sometimes even dark glasses! And try and make sure somebody's videoed it so you can watch it properly later!

Ha you have no chance I welled up just reading your post! Good luck and enjoy your wonderful DDs performance (with lots of tissues)

I've been backstage all week but with the older girls and have not been present in the wings during the death scene

It's a big act one end and the whole chorus joins in singing as dd is covered up with a sheet. :(

The production company are filming it. We're not allowed to obviously.

My DS13 is in the school choir and regularly sings solos. I get so choked up that if I'm videoing him, you can actually hear me sobbing quietly while trying to keep the camera steady Grin

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 14/09/2012 10:42

If my child's in it, it's emotional! Sorry, no use, but I start shaking with supressed tears at the slightest provocation at these things!

seeker · 14/09/2012 10:43

I cry even if it isn't my child!

PandaNot · 14/09/2012 11:32

Yes, you will cry and that's ok! My ds dances and I want to cry with pride every time I watch him perform.

bruffin · 14/09/2012 11:46

I always cry at the school plays, but then often just being in a theatre makes me well up for some reason.
My DD played Mrs Cratchett in a Christmas Carol. She was on stage for a few minutes before I recognised her, because there was lovely young lady in a long skirt (dd lives in skinny jeans) and pretty hair. I prodded DH and he hadnt recognised her either.
Unfortunately it came to the death scene of Tiny Tim. Someone fell over the scenery and DD spent the scene trying her hardest not to giggle, while mourning her dead son.

KatoPotato · 14/09/2012 11:51

I often subject my DS to a 'Letter' singalong in the car... and it usually ends with me in tears and him looking on oddly (he's 2.5)

ATailOfTwoKitties · 14/09/2012 11:55

Oh god yes. School production of Les Mis. Everyone dead. Waaaaaah!

picturesinthefirelight · 14/09/2012 12:57

We went to see Les Mis in London last month and dd was watching the death scene intently taking notes. The Les Mis official tweeter has just given us a retweet

'The' death scene? It seemed to be death scenes every five minutes in the (admittedly condensed) school version!
Are you allowed to tell us what your daughter is in and who is filming it? (nosey)

FoofyShmooffer · 14/09/2012 13:27

I find myself practically crying with nerves when they're about to come on.

DS is playing Bruce Bogtrotter in their version of Matilda the Musical next year.
Not sad as such but when he sings his solo I WILL wail. (Quietly, if thats even possible).

I'd be interested to see him play a death scene to be honest.

picturesinthefirelight · 14/09/2012 13:36

I guess I meant fantines death as its the closest to the style of dd's scene

The musical is called Her Benny based on a Victorian novel. It's only bring filmed in house for the company/cast private use. My daughter plays the sister of the main character.

One of the les mis cast just reteeeted me to say she was in the original production when she was a child!!!

Footy until yesterday my username was revolting children.

Might be best not to mention school show version in here though as it will be an illegal version. The rights are not available to M the mus

Ooh really? I'm going to find out Grin

It's a drama academy.I'd be very surprised if she did anything illegal given the audience size and promotion. Hmm. I'm going to ask around tomorrow
(and possibly get these posts removed)

picturesinthefirelight · 14/09/2012 14:49

You can perform up to 3 songs from a show in a non dramatic context. I run a drama sat school myself. I'm planning on doing a song & dance to REvolting children next year in our summer show which is allowed.

FoofyShmooffer · 14/09/2012 18:32

Oh. They are performing 3 songs in a non dramatic context as part of a larger showcase. Phew. Thanks.

I hope everything goes well for your DDs opening night. It sounds like she might just have the whole house in tears. Testament to a great performance when your fellow actors are crying Grin

BackforGood · 18/09/2012 00:49

ds was crucified in Yr5 - does that count? Grin
It was very moving actually, but then the Easter story is.

My most 'welling up' one was when he was about 13 and he did a monolaogue to close a play in which the actors played characters at a High School Reunion, looking back at how their school lives had been and how life changed (or not) and he was playing the part of a lad who had been bullied at school. there wasn't a dry eye in the house I don't think, and of course, I was drawn in to believing it was my ds, and not the character he was playing Blush
