My DD has just been accepted onto the piano summer school for a week in August. Has anyone got experience of this or tips to get the most out of it?
She is 14, loves playing and is working on grade 7 pieces. She is ecstatic to have a place, but to me it all seems a bit scary.Hmm

My BiL went there as a border from 11 - so they're used to children being there and looking after them 100% of the time, so don't get too wound up!

Thanks Mistle.
It's more the playing-I'm worried she'll feel that everyone else is so much better than her!

Make sure she's doing a decent amount of practise in the run up so that its not a problem in terms of the physical side. Good amount of exercise and sleep in the run up probably also helpful (based upon my memories of music courses)

She will practise.
I think I need to just calm down and leave it to her. She is very self-motivated and I know she'll put the work in.
Her teacher has wound me up as she now feels DD is showcasing her worth as a teacher. But it was her suggestion to apply!

Did she need to audition? I was looking at the course as well but may be for next year. What was selection based on?
Thanks

Watching with great interest! DS is going on this (doing G8 in November), but has only just turned 10, so we will have to take it in turns to chaperone him. I would love to know what to expect, even vaguely...

Viewofthehills · 15/07/2012 23:26

No audition, it went on her teacher's recommendation. They say it's not competitive (but I'm not sure how much to believe that), but everyone on it loves playing obviously.
I think if you go as a chaperoning adult you should have an excellent time going to the evening concerts and so on.
Wow Maid, Grade 8 at 10 is incredible.

I am really looking forward to my share of the chaperoning. It will be almost like being on holiday, as I'll only have one child to chaperone. Grin
I'm afraid that Grade 8 is probably the plus side of high-functioning Aspergers, so we pay for it in all sorts of other ways!!

CURIOUSMIND · 16/07/2012 11:38

I am watching with grear interest too.
Op, please update us how your DD is going on, withmore details, comments.

Nothing to report at moment, but the website has lots of information for anyone interested. Google Chetham's Piano Summer School.
( sorry, too tired to work out how to link)

I'm mostly anxious about not having our own loo!!! Rather too much like being back in halls of resisdence for my liking...

Viewofthehills · 18/07/2012 21:58

Well, i guess.. it is a boarding school.
I am most anxious about leaving her there on her own. But I guess some children will have been boarding for years by the age of 14.Hmm

True. Mu guess is that they will keep them extremely busy (just like boarding school), and that they will also be very good at taking care of them. Our son has had a pre-audition, and I was very impressed by how kind everyone was.

Viewofthehills · 20/07/2012 08:36

Maid, are you thinking of sending him there to school?
Would they cater to his needs? Just curious. If he is Grade 8 already he must be at the necessary level.

We have it on our list of possibilities for 13+ (he's currently a cathedral chorister, so his next school has to be at 13+). He has his mind very firmly set on one particular school - but we really haven't looked seriously at any alternatives (beyond the pre-audition at Chet's, which was solely music - we didn't see anything else of the school). Wherever he goes, he will need some form of scholarship!

Well DD had the most amazing week at Chet's. Learned so much and didn't want to leave.
Highly recommended, should anyone be considering it in the future. Smile
